I was asked today to make a CD for a company so that when their customers stick it in... up it comes on the screen and they get info on their products with technical drawings etc.

They current get one from their corporate supplier they have to pay for and its expensive so they would rather their own.
Anyway its not something i do. I said i would take a look. Their current one is done with PDF. There is a PDF index page which then opens different PDF files depending on the link. Users obviously have to have Adobe reader first.

I was thinking it might be better to set it up as a web page instead so no one needs to install software (and i do not have full adobe PDF creator :D).

So is there a going rate i can look at then knock a little off since im not a pro etc? Could probably be a few weeks work involved so little free time for myself after work.

If there is a better forum feel free to move.

lay out the work streams in MS project... for example

    2 days design
    3 days implementation
    0.5 days admin

and then set a daily rate for your services... say 400 euro per day x 5.5 days = 2200 euro total for the contract

daily rate when you do contract work or independant work is usually equal to your daily rate if you were on a permanent contract multiplied by 3 - 3.5... so if you get paid 30k per annum as a designer, and there are 250 working days in your contract, 30,000 / 250 = 120 x 3 = 360 daily rate. This rate should cover your office expenses (heat/electricity/phone etc) and provide you with a profit for undertaking the contract.

send them a detailed invoice / tender document outlining all the costs and what you are charging for...

the above is a roughly how a consultantant might estimate/bill for a job, may not fit all scenarios or this one

Why work for free? Be known as the guy who did it better, not the guy who does it cheaper.

Well i would never work for free.. but if i quote him €2500 and he can get it done by a professional company for that, quicker than i can do it in my spare time... see what im saying?

Anyway i did some research last night and i know i can make a pretty decent one. Just one thing, and this may be more of a technical question that does not belong here... Is there are freeware CAD viewer for viewing cad files i could set to launch from CD without having to install? You know a small little app.. few meg.... I spent ages last night looking and all i could find were free ones that you had to install.

Just make sure the hourly rate makes sense. Look for a Java Applet, for the CAD files.
