    i'm a recent windows convert ... powerbook g4 running OS X 10.4.7

i'm having trouble launching open office ver 2.0.2

i think i've installed properly ... but when i launch ... all of a sudden, nothing happens ... about 2 mins later i get a popup "command timed out" ... this is associated with a process called "droplet"

i've tried deleting/installing again, and got a fresh download of the install, confirmed 20 Gb disk space, ample RAM ... no joy

    any advice ?

Did you install X11? You need to install the version that came with your Mac's system restore disc(s), as OpenOffice isn't fully Mac-native yet.

I do have extremely good news, though. A native port of OpenOffice is being worked on, and will probably be released soon. In fact, it will be demonstrated at MacWorld Paris on the 12th.

In the meantime, you could also try NeoOffice, an unofficial Java-based port. It's available at www.neooffice.org

Here's some more news about the fully Mac-native (won't require X11 anymore) version of OpenOffice:

Sorry for writing yet another post, but if you're looking for a slick word processor, try Nisus Writer Express. I actually bought a copy, it's that nice, and does everything I need. I consider it to be "the authors word processor". It can also be customised quite a bit.

    Check it out at www.nisus.com

And to top it off, it uses Microsoft RTF file format as its native file format, so any documents it creates can be opened with Word with ease, without any need to convert or import them. It can also open RTF files generated by Word, and Import .doc files.

thanks for the wisdom ... x11 appears to be installed as part of the OS ... not sure how to test/verify this

links look interesting, might wait for the native version ... can't be ar$ed to pay for mac office from ms ... outrageous prices:eek:

I suspect you may have the wrong version of X11 installed. As I said, it needs to be the version that came on your system restore or OS disc(s). It is not installed by default.

Anyhow, you could just use NeoOffice for now. You can download it from http://www.planamesa.com/neojava/en/download.php#download

And definitely give Nisus Writer Express a go; it's one slick word processor, and a lot cheaper than buying Microsoft Office! Because it's shareware, you can download it and try it for 30 days without obligation.

... think you're right about X11 ... tried to install GIMP last night, and it also fails to launch. readme sez this could be an indication that X11 isn't installed correctly.

now ... dilemma is I don't have the os/install CD's for this powerbook ... and getting them from the original owner won't be easy ... have I any online options:confused:
