Weather in LA rarely goes much over 30...whereas 50 or 60 miles inland it could be over 40.

I got into LA in June temp 68 F 2 hours drive inland 104F...

Would also appreciate suggestions for accomodation in the LA area.
Looking for something similar to the OP, Beaches etc.

Venice beach is well worth a visit. Plenty of pubs and restaurants on the Marina Del Rey end ( Hinano Cafe, Venice Whaler etc ). Half way along the strip is Mussel beach (as seen countless times on bay watch and travel shows). From there Santa Monica boulevard is about 20 mins walk further up, and if shopping is your thing 3 Street Promenade is 2 mins from the Santa Monica pier.

Hi Cacio, I'm planning on doing the same trip, who are you flying with and what sort of route have you got? Thanks.

I know there were other threads on this over the last which and its about 2 years since I
was there but heres my 2c.

    LA
We stayed here www.hotelcasadelmar.com which was on the beach in Santa Monica beside the pier. Rubbed shoulders with Colin the boy Farrell and the douglas family. Shopping was good on 3rd street promenade in Santa Monica. You can get around ok from here too, most of the tours etc pick up from around the city once you give enoigh notice. The one exception was
Universal Studios which we paid $60 each way for a cab. If you are going here get the front of lines passes; they are far more expensive but you can walk out of one ride and straight to the top of the next with no queuing. We almost got all the rides in they day we went.

    Vegas
Stayed in the luxor which is at one end of the strip. We literally just walked the strip into all the hotels etc, watched the shows and got a cab back down. I think we paid about $99 a night for the room early in the week. If you are booking your accoom yourself make sure you visit as many accomodation sites as you can; I found huge differences in the pricing on the sites. Shopping is good with some good outlet malls. The one thing we didnt do was some of the standard sightseeing stuff, Yosemite, Grand C etc. Will just have to go back again I suppose - the stress

Do your research and know what you want to do before you go.

flying with aerlingus. got the flights for about €550. going to la first. staying for 4 nights somewhere (still looking!) then going to six flags theme park for a day. then have 2 days free to do whatever we think of at the time. prob head somewhere out of the way. going to vegas then for 5nights. staying in a fab house (if there's a group going i recommend checking out www.vacationrentals.com - nicer than a hotel and so cheap). then we've got 2 more wandering days. maybe head to whiskey pete's on the border. then heading back to la for the last day.
gonna do all the usual things like hollywood, grand canyon etc. but we're going skydiving in vegas, surfing, karting etc too. looking forward to it. let me know if you find somewhere decent to stay in la. looking at daysinn beside hollywood walk of fame.

    thanks for the replys everyone.

I'd stay in Santa Monica or Venice if I was you. Santa Monica is a nice coastal area with plenty to do there. I live a few miles down the road and am frequently there. Rent a car if you can and don't bother going to six flags unless you want to hang out with a bunch of gangbangers.

thanks tony. can you recommend nice hotel to stay there? we're not looking for anything fancy but something reasonable. we're gonna hire cars but would like to be close to the nightlife so it doesnt cost us a lot in taxi's and we can all go out properly.

I got a very good deal for a las vegas hotel deal in November on www.lasvegashotels-online.com if anyone is interested.

Something else i have also come across is priceline.com where you try and name your own price.
