    Hi,

I was working for 2 months in Donegal and raked up a substantial amount of emergency tax.

I looked to claim it back but my p45 doesn't have any pps number and there i am told i have to go and get one which means providing proof of id at a local office which i can't do cause of my current job/travelling time etc

surely if i paid tax it must have been under at least a temp pps number?

    What are my options?

Are you saying you don't have a pps no at all?

If so you absolutely need one before dealing with the tax office. Go to your local social welfare office and get one asap. I find it hard to believe you dont - generally these days only foreigners need to get them.

Ask your parents, they should have gotten you one when younger. If it's the case that you DO have one but don't remember send the p45 in anyway but make sure you put your full address and date of birth so we can find you on the system. Also write a note one it asking for a refund of tax.

Go to the tax office in Letterkenny. Take with you some form of ID, a payslip from work if you've got one, and your employers PPS number. Your employer will have assigned you some sort of temporary tax identification, usually this is along the lines of 0010170M if you were a male born on the 1st of January 1970. If you go to the tax office and explain it to them they'll probably help you sort it out.

The catch to all this is: if you're no longer being paid during the year in Ireland, you won't receive any tax back until January.

i won't have the chance to get to letterkenny during office hours cause of my current job.

Is there no way i can claim back the emergency tax the i paid using whatever temporary pps they had for me?

I don't have any particular desire to acquire a PPS unless absolutely necessary.

If its absolutely necessary to get yr cash back then its absolutely necessaryto have a pps number, no way around that problem
