Heading to new zealand for a month in december and was just wondering if:
    1. Is it expensive
    2. What will the weather be like
    3. and what the best places to go are

    Thanks

    1. Getting more expensive as time goes by but still good value for your Euro. Double room in good center of town hotel in Wellington or Auckland on a Saturday night for under Euro 100 a night.

    2. Weather - Depends on where you go. But December is summer so it would be good all over I'd imagine (I've onld been there in their Autumn)

    3. Places to see - where do you start ?, there are loads of things to see. I'd split the month 1 week on North Island and 3 on South, but that is just a personal preference. - Buy the lonely planet and figure out a plan from there.

    hey stacksey,

i was there backpacking for 10 months last year. costs and weather depend entirely on where you are. dorm beds in hostels will cost between say $17 and $25 (nz dollars). food i prepared would cost maybe $10 per day. pints (they call them handles and they're smaller) vary but $5 is about right. activities can be expensive. bungee jumps up to $150 for example. to be fair it depends so much on what you'll be doing that i can't really speculate.

weather should be good enough in december although it didn't get really nice til january/february. south of the south island will be cold (22C would be a hot day) north of the north island will be hot (shorts and sandals and not much else). it really depends where you are. as an example, parts of the west coast of the south island are in the top 5 wettest places on earth with up to 10m precipitation a year (yes 10 metres!!!) whereas the hawkes bay area of the north island has a climate just like the south of spain.

best place for me was doubtful sound, but i was able to spend 3 weeks there driving a boat, wouldn't recommend a day trip. assuming you're into the outdoors (why else would you pick NZ!) then the south island is by far and away your best bet. everything from whale watching to mountain climbing, jetboating to wild parrots that you can play fetch with. north island has all the volcanic stuff and the bigger cities (auckland is widely disliked but i actually enjoyed it, wellington is great but really only if you're living there). north island also has some great diving and snorkelling.
