Anyone know where I can get a registry repair/check (for XP) software (free and reliable) download? I posted this in Windows forum but no luck.

    thanks

    Reg Cleaner
CCleaner (optimization tool as well as registry cleaner).

There are many more, there is also a Registry checker in XP afaik, do you just want to clean it up or something?

I use ccleaner, its good but I want an actual repair kit as apposed to a cleaner. is there more to it then downloading a free application? getting errors on another pc that the registers need repairing...and a link to a certain site for a product that costs 39 dollors

Indeed it does, sounds like spyware. Is it possible you could post up a screenshot?

its on a friends laptop, it happened when he upgraded his pc from Win Me to XP, and his antivirus wasnt compatibile with XP. He thinks that (off the top of his head) one of the links he was asked to go to was (and it sounds sus) www.fixyourpc.com. Thats all Ive to go on.

    What will he do?

Is it that one where it changes your desktop and has a link to purchasing anti spyware software? Like this one? It does sound familiar to me.

I would boot into safe mode and run Ewido and a combination of other anti spyware software. Get an anti-virus scanner, AVG, avast! or one of the free ones and run them too.

Is there actually a problem with the machine? Or just a spyware infection trying to sell you snake oil?

The latter. I've seen it before. You get infected with one piece and it advertises a product to "fix" it. When in fact the product just adds more crap adware and charges you for the pleasure.

Install and run Windows Defender, Ad-aware or Spybot S&D.

I had a similar experience with a machine, my brother downloaded softare from this site and he had all kinds of pop ups stating his machine was infected. I had to install and run all three of these to get rid of it eventually. In my experience these are the best three anti spyware/malware programs out there.

    So install, update and run.

    Hopefully that'll sort you out.
