I am looking at bidding on bikes on ebay in the US. Has anybody done this?

How much would the shipping be on a 350kg bike?

I have checked VRT, I should also be liable for duty, will the duty & vat be payable on the shipping costs too? (like normal parcels). What other hidden costs will I be liable for?

you could get very stung buying a bike sight unseen off ebay.
im sure there are better ways to go about this?

Shipped a bike from the US in Sept. 06. had to take a full container to myself, bike weighed 1000.00 lbs, & was 7 feet wide (the glories of a sidecar!!!) people not willing to share due to 9/11, security checks etc, danger of delays if one persons cargo was a problem then all of it is held. Cost of container USD2.5k, (an extra USD500 if it went by air), quoted same time for shipping!! go figure!
Pay VAT on bike cost, shipping, & insurance (USD200). Took almost 5 wks in the end. Door to Door Atlanta to Dublin.
If you buy off ebay get the insurance option. Can be cheaper to fly over get the local bike for sale mags & appear on the door-step with hard cash.

1993 Ultra Classic Electra Glide with Factory fitted sidecar....canna figure the savings too well ... not a standard bike & 2nd hand.... but according to the lads here who just serviced it it's in better condition than a "similar" irish bike....the advantages of American Roads!

VRT is really low the older the bike, this revenue site will do the calc....

    https://www.ros.ie/VRTEnquiryServlet/showVRT

The killer is the VAT which works out at about a third of the [ bikes value plus shipping plus insurance].
