OK, no I am no gym bunny, I have never being overly sporty, BUT, I have always been a good walker.
I would happily do an hour walk, at a good strong pace, in the morning, and again in the evening and it kept me quite slim and healthy.
I lapsed a little in my last year of college and piled on a bit of weight.

I have decided to get back into it and do 2 hours of walking per day, as a means of shifting the bulge.
So, I was just wondering, how would 2 hour long, strong paced walk rank in terms of getting into shape.

EDIT - I have actually done a couple of hours of laking the past few days and I can feel it in my lower tummy already, which is very encouraging

You can take it as a roughly 100 calories per mile you walk. There are some online calculators out there to calulcate a more accurate figure based on your weight.

It's roughly 3500 calories to lose a pound, so you can work out how much weight you should lose just from your walks. That's assuming you don't modify your diet at all of course.

It's not going to burn as many calories as a higher intensity activity, but it will burn them and if you enjoy it and will keep it up then sounds like a good idea to me.

I just checked on the AA road watch and I walk approx 7-10 miles a day, averaging at about 8/8.5 miles.
So I guess thats about 700 - 1000 calories I can shift by actually doing something I really enjoy.
Jesus, no wonder I was so slim before, I didn't realise the benefits of a good walk!!

Actually I'm the same. I love walking. Was trying of late to turn it into jogging. Same calories worked off quicker but just can't enjoy it at all. But I love a good fast long walk.

Although I'd imagine that jogging or running is a better over all exercise, but if you don't enjoy it you won't stick to it.

If you did some resistance training too you'd be much better off.
