    Guys,

Brother in law lives in very old cottage which only had oil heating installed maybe 6 years ago ... This is very rarely used as he still preferes the open fire in winter but the heat needs to be turned on to give him hot water to wash etc ...
Just wondering if its possible to connect up a switch to immersion with timer to get hot water in taps and if so is it a big job ?
    Could a reasonable DIY'r tackle it ?

    Cheers ...

Sorry lads, the timer is not really necessary ... I got carried away ...

All we need is a switch like the ones in a standard hot press to switch on and off the immersion manually for hot tap water ...

Any instructions for doing this ?

    Thanks again ...

I'm not clear what your question is?

Do you have an immersion element in your existing hot cylinder. If so, do you have a cable from that needs terminsating in a switch.

If you don't have an immersion element is there a large nut (approx 3" across) at the top of the cylinder where an element can be inserted ?

Not quite sure Reyman ..... I'll check this evening ... Oh, if there is no element, is it a big job to fit ??

Depends how handy you are. But not a hard job really. You need to turn off the water topping up the cylinder from the attic and have some cloths etc ready to mop up the loose water when you open the large nut.

You then just screw in the immersion (with two elements) in place of the 3" nut at the top of the cylinder.

You need a special large spanner for the nut.

It might be better to get an electrician because wiring the immersion switch that terminates the cable is a little bit tricky.

The only thing is that it might be more economic to use the oil heating to heat the water. If he is living alone, the electric is probably more economic though.

You can get timer switches now which you press a button on, and the immersion stays on for a preset time (say 30 minutes). The great thing about this is that you don't have to worry about switching the immersion off. You might as well fit something like this while you have the electrician out anyway.
