Seeking GARDA Info

I've been looking online and there are very few helpful websites on the subject.

I am seriously considering joining the force after my Leaving. I'd be grateful for any help with a few of my queries.

Firstly the salary... I mean... Is it GOOD? Sorry to sound ignorant. I've looked at http://www.gra.cc/payscales.shtml which is a little complicated... Are those salary rates just for regular Gardaí? How much of an increase comes with promotion to Sergeant, Detective, Superintendent? On what basis is the overtime calculated? And how much overtime is it possible to work in a week? What kind of benefits come with the job.. I mean transport costs, holiday discount, etc?

People are telling me that a degree in Law or Forensic Science is a help... Well to what extent? Will it help your chances of being promoted a lot? Is there a higher salary when you have one? That's what I've been told..

Lastly... The training. How disciplined is it... Physically, I mean?

Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

If you're only reason for joining is money then you should seriously re-consider.

There's a time when I'd jump to the defensive there but thankfully I've matured past that.

    Any actual help? PLEASE!

if u look at it more carefully its not that complicated:
On Attestation-24,550, after 22 weeks it rises to 26991, after 1 year it rises to 28484, after 2 years it rises to 30007 and so on... after 17 years as a gaurd you'd be earning up to 44116 those pay are for regular gaurds.
i think if u take the time to read more carefully the overtime and allowances you should work it out. but if u cant understand it uhmm....
other questions u asked would have to be answered from someone that knows more;)

    hi md99,
i can answer the rest of ur Qs.
    Promotion:
Sgt starts of at 55K, Detectives get a little more than uniform but thats clothes allowance (suit), Supers get (i think) 80K a year.
    Overtime:
OT is available to all when there is a need for it. at these times it is not how much OT are u allowed do but how much can u do without sleep/food etc.
    Benefits:
are wide ranging from travel costs (in private car) for court or special assignments, medical is the best available in this country, Credit Unions are again the best in the country and we do have our own holiday club with discounts.
    Promotions:
u can go straight to college to study a course that will help in promotion or u can join the gardai to study courses thru them. either way its a help.

    hope this answers ur Qs.

Hi TheNog - are those benefits only available once training is complete..? I presume there is a group discount for car insurance? It's crazy to think that you have to serve 17 years to reach the top of the scale... I'm on that in my current job so the drop in salary is one thing that would make it so difficult for me should I be successful.... Does the overtime bring the salary up a fair bit when starting off.........?
