Apple lagging (still no notebook with built in UMTS Broadband)

I see that I can now get a notebook from Lenovo (formerly IBM), Dell, Acer and even Fujitsu Siemens with built in UMTS Broadband, yet Apple does not offer this feature yet, even as a BTO (Build To Order) option.

    What gives?

For anybody who doesn't know, UMTS Broadband is basically a built in UMTS/HSDPA modem. Pop in a SIM card, such as one from Vodafone, and get speeds of up to 3.6Mbps while on the road. Vodafone Unlimited Data is suitable for this purpose, and costs €49 monthly.

As you can tell by this thread, I am annoyed that they don't offer it yet.

Yes. Or a PCMCIA card or ExpressCard. But it's not the same as having it fully integrated. Apple needs to move on this IMHO. They're late to the party.

Think you may find that apple view this as old hat techno stuff pcmcia was introduced many years ago was lightly used at the time and expensive to produce in the circuits and manufacture. Bluetooth baby thats the way forward bluetooth phones etc who TF wants to slap a brick into a lappie nowadays anyway. In addition there is no international telecommunication standard for that tech so y integrate it at a higher cost to the consumer? still if suckers pay 50nip per month to vodaphone for that I better up my share status.

I'm not talking about PCMCIA. Not even Dell include that in their new laptops anymore... What I'm talking about is an integrated UMTS/HSDPA/3G modem, so all you put into your laptop is a SIM card, you don't insert a PCMCIA or ExpressCard anymore...

Basically a laptop with a built in 3G phone, in the same way you can get a laptop with built in wifi or built in bluetooth... No need for a card anymore.
