    What he said. got to get my accomodation fees out of the way first methinks....

    Not a fresher here either. I (well my parents) paid it already. Deadline is the 15th right? Woulda forgot bout it otherwise..

    epay.tcd.ie and a lasercard is the handiest way to go about it methinks

    Yep. http://epay.tcd.ie was down a few days ago though.

    Whaaaaaa? you mean that you don't have to pay it? And there was me arranging bank loan meetings to pay for it, until my grant comes through. I suppose I should pay my deposit instead.

    If you have a council grant then the council will pay your registration fee.

    wait, do we have to pay that every year? I thought it was a once off at the start of 3rd level.

  • Posts: 16,720 ✭✭✭✭ [Deleted User]

    You have to pay it, otherwise you'll be subject to additional fines and have to pay them too, but if you're getting a grant they should just give you the OK. Goes completely against the point of the grant system if you have to take out a loan to pay for the Reg Fee, just to get it back in a few weeks!

    Yep, every year. And it usually goes up and up and up...

    What the hell? I thought we paid an 808 euro fee at registration??

    Ahhh! I just called the fees office and actually got someone nice on the line who was v. helpful. Apparently I don't need to get a loan or anything. I just have to fill out a form and return it then pay €8 by giro. In a way that is kinda annoying as I have a bank meeting thingy tomorrow. Ahh well. I will just ask for a laser card.

    No. I think it's that you can't register until you have paid the €808.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

    You have to pay the €800 before registration (well more precisely you have to pay before whatever the deadline is). The €8 is optional, it's for payment to join the SU.

    It's actually for USI, the Union get a share of the €800. And afaik it's not optional.

    Since it's my parents that earn just about too much for me to qualify for any sort of grant or for exemption from this fee (no matter my personal status with them). And also since I don't earn I see no moral objection for them to pay this for me.
    Zoodlebop wrote:

    No, every year. Fianna Fáil were trying to reintroduce 3rd level fees a couple years back. When they couldnt (multiple reasons I won't get into it), they just hiked up the "registration fee".

    The 8 euro is the USI (union of students in ireland) levy. Some universities don't have to pay it since they've disassociated themselves from the USI. But obviously the government isn't gonna cover that for you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

    It was a nice little hike FF got away with wasn't it? :)

    ffs, 15th September....thats the same time my accomodation costs are due for - Uhoh...

    I'm doing supplementals. So if i pay the reg free and than go on to fail do i get my money back?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 194 ✭✭Dave Larkin

    So we have to pay this money before the 15th September? I don't remember reading anything about that in my orientation pack. The only thing they gave us was an orange sheet which said "More information will follow about fees shortly". I assume this means we'll be reminded about this. If not, how would any of us know about it? :p

    Since you are never told that you have repeats, where the repeats are, when they are and when the timetable is up, it wouldn't surprise me! Your reminder will be the giro more than likely.

    Oh, and TimAy, yeah you've to pay and then you'll get a refund if you drop out.

    ApeX, you misunderstand (easy to do since I posted with a misunderstanding). I thought that the Reg fee was a once off thing and that Myth had gone through 3 years in college without paying it. So "Whaaaaa?" was me thinking that Myth had somehow got round the system. "You don't have to pay it?" was me asking Myth how and if he really did get away with it.
    I probably should have quoted.

    I see no moral objection for your folks to pay your reg fee either.

  • Posts: 16,720 ✭✭✭✭ [Deleted User]

    Heh, no, I don't qualify for a grant so, like Apex, my parents will be paying it. I see where the confusion came from, sorry :)

    I'm thinking the same thing, they never mentioned the reg fee being due by a certain date, I just got the impression we paid at registration. Looks like I have something to worry about tommorrow morning... Eek.

    To the people saying "they never said there was a deadline". If you recieved the giro in the mail, the letter clearly states the deadline. If you have no recieved the Giro in the mail then your deadline maybe later, but I doubt it.

    No you're not screwed Taurean Lord, just go to http://epay.tcd.ie over the next few days and pay there (unless you get a grant/scholarship). Or just ring up Fees Office on 01 896 3360.

    Thanks for that information, buddy. I'll probably phone them up to pay.

    Hi and welcome Taurean. Listen to Myth, his job for a year was to answer student's questions like this (SU education officer). May I ask could to refrain from using text speak on boards. It's frowned upon and makes it difficult to read. Thanks.

    I received no giro. I did, however, receive a slip of paper saying I'd receive information about my fees later on. So I'm not gonna worry too much about it because Trinity officials are already in my bad books!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 156 ✭✭Pitseleh

    I was completely unaware of a deadline, let alone it being September 15th - I figured you just paid when you registered. Anyways, the orientation pack has a slip of paper stating "please be advised that details of your student fee information will follow shortly" and I personally received no giro. This means that the ball is in the fees office's court now for us freshers assumedly?

    Edit: After visiting the online fee paying service thingy, it claims my deadline was September 1st to pay the 808 euro. I hadn't even heard from Trinity at that stage (orientation pack came in yesterday), I've also (as far as I know) been accepted for a grant. So what should I do now? Tres confused at this stage so any help is much appreciated.

    I hear you. The contact does seem to be a bit lackdaisical. But I actually had a good experiance with the fees office. I called in a freak about the reg. fee and got a really kind, non-ice cold biatch, girl on the line. She told me to wait for the fee form and also that seeing as I'm getting a grant, I just have to return a form to the office (included in the pack) and my fee will be sorted.:D

    I mentioned a short evening course I did in college a few yrs ago on my CAO so they sent me out a form to detail prev 3rd level to see if i qualify for the Free Fees Initiative.

    Seeing as I paid for that short course myself, will I be entitled for free fees? :confused:

    Was the evening course just some lectures, or a full-blown course? Did you have a student card?

    Myth wrote:

    It was really just a few lectures plus some computer time and we had to do a project to complete the course. Didn't have a student number or card.

    Here's the details: http://www.hypermedia7.ie/dv.htm

    I only put it on the CAO application as they give us a C+G cert to say we completed the course.

    Rules

    If you are an undergraduate student at a publicly funded third-level educational institution, you do not, in general, have to pay fees.

    In order to qualify for "free fees":

    * You must be an Irish national or a national of another EU/EEA member state and
    * you must have been living in the EU (this includes any of the accession states) for at least 3 of the 5 years before starting your course and
    * you must be undertaking an undergraduate course of at least 2 years duration and
    * you must not have a previous qualification to the same level (Students who hold a National Certificate or Diploma and are progressing to degree courses may be eligible) and
    * you must not be repeating the year (although this exclusion may be waived where a student has to repeat a year due to certified serious illness)

    The undergraduate courses for which the free fees arrangements apply are courses in

    * universities
    * Institutes of Technology
    * teacher training colleges
    * National College of Ireland
    * A number of religious education institutions.

    Free fees do not apply to courses in private colleges, whether they have National Council for Educational Awards approval or not.

    The fact that a course is on the CAO list is not, in itself, enough to make it a "free fees" course.

    I assume you'll be ok. Any issues, contact Rob (Education Officer of the Students' Union) at education@tcdsu.org.

    What's this form about applying for awards? I think I recall somewhere that if you get 50 points more than necessary for your course, and above 550, you qualify to get some book tokens or something? It's rather possible that I made that up, but it would be handy nonetheless if it were true. Anyone know anything about this?

    The entrance award, which is what you're on about i presume, is given to students who score 545 points or over in LC or get 3 A grades at A-Level, it is awarded in the form of books tokens split over 1st and 2nd year.

    Hey. I know this isn't exactly the right place for this question, and i've asked it already in another thread but I would very muh like some info A.S.A.P so I apologise for my persistence. Its a question about the free fees scheme. How do i register for it or whatever, or am i automatically accepted for free fees without having to worry about me fees or documentation etc.. Please if any one can help or give info it'd be very much appreciated

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 638 ✭✭✭Endymion

    What do you mean by "free fees" Your fee isn't the 800 euro administration charge. If you're irish and applied through the CAO, then you don't have to do anythign wrt the thousands of euro the goverment pays for your education. You still ahve to pay the 800 euro though, unless you get a grant.

    God only knows where you got it into your head you had to register for free fees. Trinity will/has already let you know what you owe them.
