Ya dont have to attend everything but its a good idea as youll be with people from your course and there will be loads in your position who wont know anyone.
So its a great chance to get to know other people in your class.

Social Life in DCU is what you make of it. There isnt much there to entertain you but if your a happy glo lucky person youll be fine.

Freshers week is a week long session in the bar

where will you be staying?? are you from Dublin?

Hah, you're a Business Studies, the first thing you need to do is stop worrying you'll be absolutely grand. :D

As for how to have a good time in DCU, thats easy, its either socities or the Bar...or both. Find some socities you think you'll like, join'em, go to events and you're bound to meet people. Freshers week is also a great place to meet people in and around the bar for abit of craic. The Hub itself is cool around then too, there'll be plenty of activity...and then theres Clubs & Socs Day.

Wait a sec...you're a girl who likes drinking, clubbing and football...yea you'll find it REALLY hard to make friends. :D

Nah, two of my best mates are in Business and they loved it. Hours aren't too bad and judging by the amount of time we've spent in the bar they're not all compulsory either. :D

this is gona sound stupid.. but what exactly do u do in freshers week? and i take it its the week all the 1st years go in b4 the rest yes.. ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 54 ✭✭minky18

haha sounds gud!! but i heard its like a 35 hour week like wat the ****????!!!

i want a part time job in between.. nd want a life on the side......!!

    madness!

    is the gym worth joinin??

and is anyone else out there a fresher in business??????!!!!!!!!!

35 hours? Don't know where you heard that but it seems a tad excessive for first year business.

Yep, the gym is pretty cool as is the swimming pool. While its rather pricey for a lump sum at the start it really is worth it in the long run.

As for what you do in Freshers Week, well Tuesday and Wednesday are the two Clubs & Socs Days, then there's the Freshers Ball later that week followed by loads of events and bands around campus during the day and night for everyone. Lectures are still on but the lecturers know that most people either won't be there or won't be in good condition so they usually keep it light. :D

Yes it is. Basically you go to a load of little talks by various groups (college president, your faculty, security, etc). Some of them are fun/interesting and some of them aren't. Main problem is people saying the same stuff other people said. It's worth attending though, as you never know which one will have some important info, and as someone said the rest of the class will be there.

i thought lectures didnt start till nxt wk - loadsa the stuff says u shud attend seminers nd **** do we rly hav to?? its freshers wk after all!!

ah for the hours thts wat i thought... it better not b tht many hours!!

Anyone remember that day we all went to the bar at 11am?
    Legendary.

    Also - business?
You just made an enemy for life!

    tell me about this feud????????

    CA - comp. apllications......

u kno wt business course is like?? hours etc??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,528 ✭✭✭TomCo

I'd say its pretty cushy, definitely not 37 hours a week!
Probably closer to 20-ish, plus you can skip lectures at your discretion.

I never come in for 9am.

Oh, and you get reading week. As far as I know thats like a week off for nothing, we don't get it.

There's usually a boards get together organized in the hub isn't there? Or is that just me inventing some random event in my head and using it as an excuse to go drink in the bar..... There should be a good few around for orientation week anyway.

    DCU BOARDS BEERS!!!!!!1111111

    Never heard of that. LIES!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭gizmo

Geez, I turn my back for a second and look what happens... :D

Indeed, proper lectures don't start till the 25th. Ah, don't confuse Orientation Week with Freshers Week. For the record, Orientation Week starts on the 18th and has all those mini talks by the different people on campus re: your course, security, talk by the President etc... Freshers Week is after that and thats when all the real fun starts as I described above. :D

Yes I've been thinking about a DCU Boards Beers. How does Orientation Week suit you guys? Basically it will just be a bunch of us in the bar drinking and playing some pool. For those of you worried you won't get to know anyone heres a nice start and for those who know too many people and need some new friends (i.e dregin) it'll be good for you too. ;)

The Freshers Ball is the first major event of the year on campus. Assuming it goes by the same format as previous years they'll open both bars and the main Venue. They'll get some college/cover rock bands in the "Old Bar", have some varied music in the "New Bar" and some bigger acts live in the Venue. For more info about the bars themselves check out the FAQ thread posted above. I've always enjoyed these events to be honest, theres always a great crowd at them, theres plenty of drink and decent music...what more could you want for the price of a few quid for an admission ticket?

As for the Hub/Student Bars, well you'll hear some great things and some terrible things about them. Personally, I've always loved the Old Bar and will defend it to the ground, its got a great atmosphere when theres people in it and you can't beat those €3 drinks nights down there. The New Bar doesnt have as good an atmosphere but can be a nice place for a more quiet drink.

Hah, theres no CA/Business fued. Its more due to the fact that DCU doesnt have an Arts degree hence the BS students become said Arts students i.e wasters. By that same logic CA are seen as the nerds and theres some banter between the two. Its all aload of bollox really. :)

And hell yea I still go to DCU, I never want to bloody leave! :D

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Well I've definitely been to at least one of these phantom events!

Anyway all points have been made above, you make friends in your class and outside as well, sound like an outgoing girl so I am sure you will not have to worry about anything, just enjoy it and you'll be fine

hk god freshers ball aint actually a ball... ooooops me nd my stupidness.

and one last thing hw is business seen as the arts degree we dnt gt the privledge of a 12 hour week i wish!! and CA was over 100 pts lower then business this yr - so we r trhe smarter bunch :D:D..

ps. plz dnt hurt me nw :O

The week starting on the 18th is actually Orientation Week. Assuming the Students Union follow the same plan as previous years Freshers Week will start on the 25th, yes the same day as lectures start. As I've said though, this first week of lectures is light, you should go to them alright but don't worry too much about being hungover or anything. :D

Hah, yea I got confused about the "Ball" thing in DCU too. Theres the Freshers, Christmas, Rag and Summer Balls throught the year too. All of which are usually class craic.

Reading week should be from the 6th to the 10th of November.

Aw, I wouldn't hurt you, BS students are perfectly capable of hurting themselves. The phrase "If you had brains you'd be dangerous" comes to mind...:p

Reading weeks are for the weak! Going in 4th engineering and still have to experience one:(

That is the reason there is like a 50% drop out rate in CA! BS are defo the BA of DCU. Us eng and CA people begrudge the Hrs of BS(or rather the lack of them) so we need some thing to moan at:)

Don't be surprised if that changes this year. There's talk of moving Freshers week to week 2. I guess Clubs and Socs day might have to move as well to facilitate that.

Yep, heard about that alright. Just don't want to be confusing the newbies. :)

Nope, theres plenty of stuff on throughout the day during Freshers Week. There'll be posters all around campus and mails sent out to everyone with a full schedule of events so you'll know exactly when and where everything is.

And like I said, there is no feud, its only abit of messing. Most of my mates are in the various business courses sure. :D

Hah, nah its just handy having someone to give you some info about the place before you arrive. When I came here most of my mates had gone to NUIG so I was back to square one, seriously though don't worry, making friends in college is pretty damn easy. ESPECIALLY if you're in BS. :D

If you meet someone you get along with just tell them to meet you in the bar that evening for a drink. Go, drink and while there just ask for a number or something. Remember, there'll be loads of people in exactly the same boat as you, thats what makes it so easy. :)
