Campus room

Anyone else got a late offer of a room? I did, after being told I had almost no chance. Thing is, I've paid the deposit and first month rent on a houseshare and ordered the NTL and everything, and the girl whose house it is is now counting on me moving in :( I've spent weeks sorting it out. I should be happy to get the room but now I don't know what to do. If I take it I'm majorly screwing over the girl, and it's a nice house. The only thing is I was worrying about the area, and I'd have no problems with that on campus. What would you do if you were me? Are campus rooms that great?

    Where on campus?

Where and how affordable is this other house? It shouldn't be too difficult to find someone to replace you if your heart is set on living in Trinity, so long as the house is a decent place for a decent price.

If the rent is close enough to what you're gonna pay anyway, spend some time trying desperately to find someone to fill the room - or contact your man who asked about it in your other thread.

  • I don't know any details at all. I received an e-mail stating just that I had got a place on campus and that I will get the details in the post. I live in the middle of nowhere though and the post takes ages, will they tell me where the room is if I ring up the Accommodation Office tomorrow? Would I be able to have a look at the room? I was undecided but my parents think I'd be mad for turning down campus since I really wanted it. I'm thinking I'll go for it, I do have a bit to lose now (the deposit, nice house, nice flatmate) but I was having a worry about the area it's in, and with a campus room I'd have no worries about coming home at night and that. I'd just like to see the room in case it's awful. I wouldn't have cared if they'd given me one in June but now I've more to lose.

I never worked out how much campus rooms are per month, does anyone know off the top of their head? I'd be paying 500/month in the house, no bills.

Where exactly is the house with your houseshare? If you're looking for someone to replace you in the houseshare, I'd be very interested. I'm kind of stuck for accommodation at the moment.

Jazmine Microscopic Schoolroom - if you want to know what the rooms are like just ask here - between everyone on here we've been in every room i'd say :P

i'd laugh if its in the same house as me :D

  • The house is in Dublin 8. If I end up on campus and the girl wants me to find someone I'll let you know.

Could someone give a description of the rooms? The official site has very little. They seem to vary greatly, some are lovely and some are crappy. I'd be interested to know about kitchen and bathroom facilities, and the set up of the rooms. Are people friendly with the other flatmates like in Trinity Hall or do people keep to themselves?

The rooms vary per place on campus.

  • Which are the better ones and which are worse? Do they all have internet access? What about cable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

nicest ones at the mo are probably the done up front square ones.

new square is old, high ceilings, a touch dingy but i like it. has interweb.

Botany bay are lovely. really lovely. has cable, and interweb.

  • And are they apartment style like Trinity Hall, or tons of rooms with a shared kitchen and shower etc? I know Botany Bay is apt style but I think you can only share with a specified partner.

mentioning no names, ( hey heggo!)

There was an Incedent that myself and atleast half a dozen of these members heard about where people who didnt have a care in the World ended up have quite a few cares in the world....

    That's way too vague.

  • what are you on about agent smith

  • Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 21,504 Mod ✭✭✭✭Agent Smith

    someone being attacked on campus

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

    When/where/how/what is/was/were this/these?

  • Rang up a few times and was eventually told they haven't even decided about who goes in what room yet. Hope I didn't annoy them too much so they put me in a dump

Are Pearse St residences considered campus btw? I see on the list of 'campus' applicants that they put people there and in Goldsmith. I assumed id be on the campus itself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

pearse st. are the rooms beside the health centre. they're nice, and on campus.

  • Oh OK. I was thinking they were actually on Pearse St. Is the health centre next to that big sports field? My knowledge of the campus is embarrassing. Which are the ones outside the campus then? Goldsmith isn't it? They had a bridge thing across Westland Row to get there.

I made a total hash out of applying for a room. I was thinking Botany Bay were the only campus modern rooms, and put that even though I'd no-one to share with. Should have put Pearse St or GMB.......doh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

and voila - i'm not quite sure why I put names on half of these when they were already there, but still.

and yup, the ones across westland row is goldsmith.

  • Grand thanks.. it's all clear to me now! Where have you lived on campus before? Are there any rubbish rooms or are they all great? Which are the old fashioned ones with the shared kitchen and bathrooms? Does everyone use the laundry thing by house 6?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

this year'll be my first time on campus actually - just a lot of my friends have stayed on campus before :)

new square is a mix of apartments and single rooms. apartments have their own kitchens, single rooms share. all share common bathrooms.

Botany bay is 2/3 person apartments only, kitchen in the apartment and bathroom.

Rubrics i'm really not too sure of - heard bleh things from people to be honest...

Pearse street is single rooms, as far as I know - shared kitchen and ensuite bathroom in some rooms anyhow.

haven't been in the new newsquare rooms, or goldsmith, so can't help with those, sorry!

  • great thanks for the info....... none of them sound too bad. I saw some I didn't like by house 6, but those might be the ones they redid? Do you know if they put strangers in the apartment style ones, or only friends (I don't get the reasoning behind that really since friends are more likely to fall out and want to leave)? Where will you be this year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

i spent a year in goldsmith, tis nice, if not a bit clinical and cramped i guess, nice concrete walls so ye can't hear any ambient noise from streets and that where i was...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

for the apartment style ones generally the other person in the apartment has to agree with the selection...or else they have to leave themselves :P

Am living in new square this year, which should be cool enough. central and close enough to where my lectures'll be :)

  • My room is a standard single in New Square - what are they like? I rang up the accom office and was told there's someone in there so I can't go round for a nosy. Apparently they have internet but no cable tv (booo) and shared bathrooms and kitchens......what are they like? How many share them? I take it they have cupboards and that for storing your food and so on?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 309 ✭✭Bartron Prime

I'm also in a standard single in New Square, or CSTSI as college refers to it in their romantic language. They're supposed to be nice, if a little simple. I have some friends who lived in them and they liked them. I believe it's three apartments that share the kitchen and bathroom. They do have central heating, which is a plus. The electrical wiring apparently leaves something to be desired. They use the two pin flat sockets (phased out in the 1950s) for which an adaptor can be bought from college (or, I assume, from Lenihans, Capel Street for I guess a lower price). Also, if you use a kettle in the kitchen, you risk blowing the fuse. The kitchen would have cupboards and such yes. So, buy an extension lead (perhaps surge protected) and don't plug too many things in. When you asked about internet, is it wireless or a fixed network point? Although, I did take ISS' offer of free network cable so I'm good either way. ;) Can't wait to move in. Even though I will be living opposite the library...

I'm in goldsmith hall and I don't know exactly what type of room I'm getting (ensuite? Sharing a bathroom? NO IDEA), don't know how many people I'm sharing the kitchen with either. I could probably find out but it won't change things.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 309 ✭✭Bartron Prime

The definition of the types of accommodation (such as CSTSI) can be found here. The actual allocation of rooms can be found here. Simply search for your student number then match it against the code dealy. Goldsmith is generally at least three people to an apartment I believe. Supposed to be very nice though.

GSUSI = Single within ensuite apartment

So what does that mean? If they mean Single bedroom with an ensuite bathroom they've a crazy way of saying that. It sounds like I'm sharing a bathroom. What do you think?

Also, if there are generally 3/4 ppl per kitchen why is my room number 9? Wouldn't that imply there are at least 9 rooms on the floor and I can't imagine there being more than one kitchen per floor.

  • What is this about the sockets? I wish they would inform us about this stuff. Where do you buy them? Are the sockets like that in the rooms and everything? I took it that it was a fixed internet point, didn't ask. When I was in Trinity Hall I had to go to a network clinic to get my computer Trinity-ised, is it the same on campus?

George's_Key that does sound weird. I've never heard of ensuites in Goldsmith - everything I've seen has been 3 to about 6 bedrooms sharing 1 or 2 bathrooms. It is a while since I've been in there though. And I've definitely never heard of a nine bedroom apartment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 309 ✭✭Bartron Prime

All the Goldsmith Hall apartments appear to be classed as GSUSI. Goldsmith apartments, according to the Accommodation Office website, are defined as follows: "Apartments with 4/5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a kitchen/living room. Network connections and television points (within livingroom) available. Central heating". It sounds like one room might be ensuite while the rest share. But that doesn't make much sense. It could be number 9 in the house as a whole. What floor are you on?

I'd suggest contacting the Accommodation Office directly. The email is residences@tcd.ie at the phone number is 01 - 6081177. The full contact page can be found here. There is a list of extension numbers that might be useful. Sorry I can't be of much specific help. GSUSI does seem an odd way to group the rooms.

Izzy once your laptop has been trinitizied it's trinitizied and you don't have to go to another clinic (unless you've changed the OS). That's very annoying about the wonky sockets, I thought new square were done up this year?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 30 George's_Key

Floor 3. I'm not going to bother ringing them it wouldn't change the layout. I'm thinking of moving out in Janurary anyway.

I know, it's weird. Basically, as New Square hasn't been refurbished (at least House 34 where I am hasn't), they use a two-pin flat socket. It sort of looks like an American socket but works on the Irish volatge (220-240V) so American plugs won't work. You can get them from the Accommodation Office or, hopefully, Lenihans. I should be in town tomorrow. If I remember I'll swing past Lenihans and post what I find. As far as I'm aware, there is only one socket in the apartment. This was definitely the case in the pre-renovation Front Square apartments at any rate.

I hope it is the same. My laptop is configured for the college wireless network so I presume many of the settings (domain, user name etc.) would be the same. If not, a quick trip to ISS should sort it out. Send them an e-mail or give them a call. The ISS contact-y thingy page is here. Their 'Connecting to the College Network' doesn't offer much help. Generally, ISS respond rather well to e-mails and you can do so now.

or you can be a cheap git like i plan to be, and do some fancy home rewiring :) its standard wired and iirc they were never fully phased out - they're used for lighting mostly these days to an extent.

and its a wired access point.

  • It's a bit **** that they don't mention about the sockets IMO and that there's only one  But you can buy one adapter and plug the extension lead into it right?

I have a new laptop so it will need to be Trinitiezed, I'll give ISS an e-mail when I get down there then. They give you the orange cable thing free don't they? Do you still need to run Windows 98 or XP Pro? That could be a problem (I can't find the installation disc)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

you need to be running XP pro alright.

  • Shiit. I am not computer savvy at all but is there a way to get the OS off my old laptop and on my new one without an installation disc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

not easily, and if the original installation is an OEM one then its infact illegal to do so :/ the XP OEM licence's are generally limited to the machine they came on :/

(i.e. if the laptop's were dell or that)

  • My laptop came with XP. I bought XP Pro to use at Trinity Hall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

'XP'? XP home, pro or MCE?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

pff, MCE. dont even mention that in my presence. its like a giant vat of urine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

which has more features MCE or home? i know home is terrible, ain't really used MCE

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

MCE is hideously cut down - worse than Home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,314 ✭✭✭Nietzschean

eww i guess that explains why dell puts it on laptops now. poor people who don't know any better, god help them with the what 10 versions of vista?

    Whats MCE??

BTW, on the ground floor of some of the New Square houses (think i did it in 33/34 not sure which) you can get wireless from the Library or GMB or somewhere.

Thought that you were on campus last year crash??

    media centre edition

  • Some of you have asked about the house I'm leaving. It is available now until June or longer. It's in Dublin 8, about 20 mins walk from Trinity, nice small 2 bed house to share with a professional female. Another female preferred to live there. Will have wireless internet and possibly cable, fully equipped house. 500 euro/month. If interested PM me and I'll put you in touch with the girl.
