This has been bugging me for nerarly two decades:

Why do ice-cream vans (In Dublin, anyway) play the theme tune to Match of the Day when doing the rounds? What is the connection? I know at least three and I can remember it even from my childhood....

    Anyone?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I've never noticed them playing the MOTD theme tune, but now it's stuck in my head. Thank you very much

i don't even know what the match of the day tune is.
the guy in my area plays green sleeves and comes around at 10 at night.

    10 at night eh?

Does he put any strange white powder into the machine to try and widen his customer base? If you ask for a 99, is it a joint in there instead of a flake? The "hundreds and thousands" appear to be crushed pills....

Why does MOTD use the ice cream van theme as its own theme song?

Its the same here, I can only assume he lives nearby and is on his way home or somthing. Always startles me to hear it, realising the place is full of kids (*cough* louts)... that time of night.

Well according to Wiki, the MOTD theme was written especially for the programme so its ususal. Next time one comes ask around the driver if they wouldn't mind changing it to the Sopranos (might suit some areas of Dublin. :)) theme tune or something else to your liking.

Oh My God, its sooo apt that this thread is here. I have been waking up at 1am in the morning over the last few weeks to the ice cream van playing greensleeves. I thought I was going MAD or something.

    I'm in the Harold's X area - Well at least i'm not imagining it!!!!:D

The ice cream van in my area plays the Popeye tune. Damn irritating as it parks two doors down and leaves the tune on for the whole time. I'm starting to wish it was the MOTD tune.............anything, but please not Popeye! It's killing me!

I thought that was just the crazy ice-cream van guy in my neck of the woods! Turns up every day playing Match of the Day.

I get a bit of variation when it comes to the ice cream van, but the Teddy Bears' Picnic seems to be a favourite with the driver. It usually comes around 7 or 8 in the evening but I haven't seen it, or heard it, for a good while.

Have heard greensleeves and Teddy Bears Picnic too. Never MOTD.

Teddy bears picnic and MOTD, it's annoying when the two of them arrive together. It causes an awful racket

Ice Cream trucks are a mystery. While i never see them in the summer, they always always appear on wet, cold, windy January night's....playing the MOTD tune.

The ones where i live have some strange tune that sounds like something out of a horror movie. Every time i hear it i think some clown is gonna jump out and kill me..., i go to the shop for ice cream.

YES. Since I clicked on this thread, I've been trying to remember the tune my local ice cream van plays. That's it. Weird, seeing as I'm in Dublin and you're apparently in Dundalk. How many are there playing that tune? That's gonna be stuck in my head for a while now.

Oddly enough, that helped me to remember it. I had the great escape tune stuck in my head, thank you. :)

The one near where I work plays 'Swedish Rhapsody' and anyone who has ever heard of number stations will know why I get the creeps when I hear it.

The one beside where I live used to play Greensleeves now he's all bling blingin', it plays the theme of some Snes game.

Sometimes my local one plays the MOTD song, but it also has this other jingle that i had never heard, quite catchy.

I know a guy woh has one and only works whan its pissing rain , he reckons that when the kids are stuck in the house for the day ( annoying parents) they (the parents) are delighted to see him and just send the kids forth to bestow cash upon him ..

Do all of you only have one Ice Cream van that comes into your estates??

We have at least 3 that don't seem to have anything to do with each other. That means that one might just have left & then another one will arrive.. Its so irritating especially as they all usually park either outside our house or just down from it...

I don't understand how they can be making money as there are so many of them. Can't remember what tunes they play though, just know they all piss me off!

There was an ice cream van one year near my house that played Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head - a... rather interesting choice of music to say the least O_o

I often hear MOTD and Popeye though.
