I'm planning to re-rip my entire CD collection and need something that will rip to 192/mp3 and write artwork/album cover to each file.

    anyone get any suggestions?

Windows Media Player, if you don't want to use a proper solution like media monkey.

I don't understand why you wouldn't use such a simple package...

If you want to go the pro root, for a lean and very good solution, set up EAC with LAME then use MusicBrainz or some such to get your artwork...

I just tried wmp and it didnt do the album cover at all?????

also MM doesnt write the album cover to the file as requested.

You can't insert album art into mp3s.

The mp3 container only holds audio.

OK so the tag I guess (sorry if the term is incorrect).

Windows Media Player or iTunes (never used it myself but presumably it does this) should do almost anything that can be done with ripping CDs.

    That includes ID3 tags.

    let start again shall we?

I'm using itunes as my main player (ipod, playlists, streaming etc). Itunes USED to download artwork while importing CD's up to recently but not any more. I can manually add the artwork in itunes but as already said I'm looking for something to do it during the rip.
While WMP does download the artwork its of now use outside WMP from what I can see. While mediamonkey & others also download the artwork they also want to store it in the album directory as apposed to in the tag so again I would have to edit it manually in itunes.

so does anyone know of a ripper that will download and save the artwork in the tag at the same time?

When I've used mediamonkey to add artwork it adds it to the tags. Check the options.

during the rip or just when updating tags? I've tried during the rip and it just prompts for a folder to save to.

Well I've never ripped CDs in MM. But def when tagging it saves to tag. I used MM to retag a whole bunch of MP3s. Open the files in itunes and the artwork is there.

I have plenty of options for doing it afterwards (itunes, MM, TGF, Tag&Rename) so there is no need to keep suggesting those options as thats not what I'm looking for.

re: MM, I'll try again tonight but anything I did last night just saved to a jpg within the folder (even after setting the option to save it to the tag)

Leave wmp open and it will find the artwork, it doesn't add the artwork when it rips it.

Edit, Album art is'nt added to the tag, its placed as a jpeg in the folder

I really don't think that any program does what you're asking. AFAIK it's not possible to stick a JPEG image into the tag of an mp3 file, iTunes is just using some trickery

Well MM certainly provides the option to. How it actually does it I don't know. but ID3v2 tags do allow for pics to be added.

thats the option I'm using but its just keeps saving it to a file withint the folder. When I import the mp3 into itunes there's no artwork there.

Try right clicking the song in itunes and selecting Get Info. See if artwork appears then.

I just tried it there and worked fine for me. You must be doing something wrong...

I downloaded LAME on the new pc, and wanted to set up internal MP3 encoder, but the link it gives you to LAME will not connect.

    any ideas?

I installed Vista RC1 and played about with WMP 11 (beta) and it will do what I want. Plus with 3 drives in my pc it will rip from all 3 at the same time cutting down the lenth of time required to rip my entire collection.

I have a plugin that will allow me to sync with the ipod so its looks like i need to say goodbye to itunes.

Post a linky to the plug-in for the ipod. Lookin for somethin like that.
