Need help with Dedicated Web Server

    Hi all,

I have a new service i want to launch. I am renting a Dedicated server for this new web application. i would like to know what kind of specifications i should be looking for on this dedicated server.

This new web application is developed in ASP.NET so it will be running on IIS 6.0 also with MS SQL Server. So the operating system on the server will most likely be MS 2003 server with IIS 6.0 and a license for MS SQL Server.

Basically it is a web service that sends SMS messages with barcodes in them. When it is in full production we expect to have as many as 5,000 transactions a day and this could increase. A customer will purchase an item from our partners website, the request will be forwarded to us, where the requested product will be looked up in our database and then through a SMS gateway the barcode will be sent back to the customer.

I am just a developer and dont really have much network experience, does anyone have any suggestions regarding:

    Backups
    Security
    RAID configurations
    RAM
    CPU's
    Bandwidth

What is essential that i have? can you recommend any companies? etc

I appreciate any help anyone can give me .

    Thanks

    JC

Quite a few things to take note of there...
    • Start small, upgrade or even change your server later. No point in paying for what you don't need yet. If you upgrade or change your server, some places will give you both servers side by side for a week to migrate.
    • Be careful with your software licences. SQL Server and 2003 Standard Edition can easily cost more than the cost of the actual server itself, including power and connectivity. See if you can make it go with SQL Server Express.
    • Do you want backups, or disaster recovery? Backing up your files and your database with a maintenance plan is easy enough - imaging your server for DR is a bit more complex.
    • Buy this book! http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/securews/
    • RAID is good. RAID 1 is nice, RAID 5 is better, with hot spares better again.
    • RAM / CPU / Bandwidth, as above. Start modest and see what you actually use. Don't pay loads for what you might not need yet.

I would recommend using an Irish-based server for your kind of application. Nice for search engine stuff, and you might use the latency advantage.
