Rip Offs

Just thinking of the amount of things people get ripped off for. For example my sister got a remortgage and the solicitor charged something like €2,000 for just handling the signing off of the cheques etc involved. Im sure theres more to this than signing cheques but i doubt theres a whole lot of work to this and could someone not do this work themselves if they had the knowledge.

Houses is another, people automatically assume you must go to real estate agent and in truth you do but 2% (i think its around that) is very high. Why is there no company that does this for a fair amount, why dont most people try just erecting a sale sign themsleves and advertise in their local paper for a few weeks first. If the house is in a good location it should sell itself fairly well by word of mouth and or people seeing the for sale sign.

Maybe there is a law you have to use them or maybe you need a license to get involved in real estate?? Shouldnt be after all its just advertising.

And how many other rediciously overpriced things can you think of that you get ripped off for????

Now before i get jumped on, im not running down solicitors and/or real estate agents im just stating that there could be more realistic prices. If a house for 1/2 million sells after 1 week of avertising then it would cost the company very little money, they should give a fair price based on this.

Ah, why not? Don't think you'd be jumped on for slagging off those particular professions to be honest.

As for the per centage on real estate, I would imagine it's the same story as pubs and pharmacies. A cosy little cartel designed to make maximum profit and kill any threat of competition.

its the scumbags that run the phone companies that piss me off,the price for a little text message or a call is ridiculous

    car insurance - crazy.

last year i expected my premium to go down with my one years ncb - when my renewal it was higher than the previous year.

I called them and they said prices had gone up. i said thanks but no thanks, made one phone call and got it 450 euro cheaper.

I can see where you're coming from but it's not realistic. You agree a fee with the estate agent before they put a property on the market and if it takes them two years to sell the property then they're losing out. Also you have no idea the amount of "behind the scenes" work goes into conveyancing. But yes, if you knew how to do it you could do it yourself. The difference is you don't know how to do it and trust me, you don't want to put yourself to the hassle of doing it yourself!!!

Anyways, I hate paying high prices for fruit and veg which isn't of decent quality.

Ther has been a lot of press recently as to how we, as a nation, were gearing up to "rip off the Yanks" during the Ryder Cup.

We had the ambassador and I think Mad dog O'Donoghue bladdering on about it. Some place in Mullingar was I think is 4 times more expensive.

Just looking at www.aerlingus.com for Dub Malaga Dub around mid term, basic fares.

on 24th Oct Dub Malaga is 53 on 27th is 205

The returns are 53 and 275 on 9th and 3rd Nov respectively.

Is it not the same thing, supply and demand?

Actually a solicitor has to do the conveyancing. It's the law.

The telecoms companies (broadband and high phone charges).
The Government (VAT, Illegal VRT and Petrol taxes).
Car Insurance FFS, not ever male driver between 17-25 drives like a looney.
Some of us can actually use roundabouts better then "qualified drivers" and compared to the majority of people using the new R710 bypass in Waterford (with its annoying 60kph limit), you wont see me overtaking those who actualy want to stick to the limit and avoid penalty points.

I was just about to say the same...1200 a year as a named provo driver on a 1.6...I would rather be the guy paying 800 more on his own license than have to pay 3,000+ when you go out on your own

That is run by the credit union by means of local solicitors and auctioneers and it is called Home buy, Home sell.

    Its a fantastic system.

When I applied for a loan with AIB for a car, they wanted me to pay a 63 Euro "document transfer" charge (because I applied for a "car loan" since I mentioned the loan was for a car) - I asked them what they needed the 63 Eurosfor, and basically it was their charge to send the documents from the bank to the dealer (or something to that effect, she wasn't quite clear and quite evasive). I then chaged my mind and applied for a personal loan (after I was told I needed to hang up and ring again...), and did not have to pay those 63 Euros.

Now THAT's a rip off on top of a load of bollocks!

That shows the ammount of the mess out there
I would say if u dont do ur reserch properly u can seriously pay way more than you should !

Its definately worth doing detailed reserch before u do some serious buying like buying a house or a car or loan !

These banks their real money is the unclaimed money !

there are loads of people who have accounts and they die or just move abroad and ther money is just in bank !

not just research, but a certain amount of cop-on is also required - if I hadn't asked, I would not have found out about it...(and I did not specifially apply for a car loan, just for a loan for a car...). But I'm sure they get away with it if people don't ask questions...

€4.50ish for a pint. Same for a 330ml CAN on the train. And don;t even ghet me starte on the soft drink/mixer prices. One of the reasons I don;t go out all that often.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Yeah you get your own solicitor and surveyors in.

Actually the cost for an estate agent is up to 3%.
All they do is take a few photos advertise and show people around.

Freinds of mine was with an estate agent and the property didnt sell. In the end it was a guy driving by saw the house and asked..he never went through the estate agent.. and they still took their cut.

You are all just noticing this now?!!?

We as a nation have been systematically ripped off in every facet of life for the last 10 years! everything in this country is stupidly over-priced from cars to car insurence, from houses to alcohol and food. Everythinng!!!!

several stealth taxes are also in full operation,

eg: If I wanted to avoid the crazy prices in Ireland and I go to say... Germany and buy a new car, I am then be able to bring that car to any EU country without further taxation as I have already payed my VAT in a member State. However, if i try to bring that car back home to ireland, guess what?....i am charged VAT again!! and if the car I bought in germany for 12grand is valued at 18grand in ireland, I pay VAT on 18,000!!

The government, the entire business community and irish consumers themselves are all colluding in this rip-off culture, all rolling around in our own sense of self satisfaction and putrid greed.

as soon as i'm finished education and on my own feet, i'm outta here for sure.

The cost of basically everything in this country is ridiculous, which is why a lot of people are buying more and more online.
Service providers and stores in this country charge such high prices for things in Ireland for one simple reason,... because they CAN!
People continue to pay these insane prices and then moan about it afterwards. Hardly likely to change as long as that continues.

"Word of mouth" buisness is becoming less and less important to sellers because people are prepared to go by the "you get what you pay for" idea which is a complete farce. And in itself makes some companies and individuals to charge more for their services to "look as good as..." Competetive pricing gone backwards imo.

Ferdi, you dont pay VAT importing cars from Germany to Ireland you pay VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax) which is 30% and its paid on the value of the car here, not as it was when bought. It is one of the reasons people consider Japanese Imports (they are worth little). VRT is illegal in the EU, but Ireland and Denmark are not giving it up. Feckin 21%VAT is a rip off too, Telephone and broadband should be charged at 13.5% really, I consider them essential services, especially the phone.

Oh, I have my own insurance on my own car. I am not a named driver. Fortunatly the parents pay for most of the car insurance as I dont earn a huge lot of money.

Not sure if its been mentioned or not but... rail tickets. €67 from Tralee to Dublin? Madness. And you ask for a single ticket and its only a couple of euro cheaper?

Although I do have my ways of getting it for €43.50. :D

Someone mentioned that not everyone between 17-25 drives like looneys.
Unfortunately the ones who do ,and there are plenty ,screw things up for everybody.

These little runts seem to have street cred.... if you want to do something about the loading for that age group report these dudes!!!
