    Hi folks,

I believe I disabled my CD/DVD drives from automatically booting by changing a setting in regedit a couple months ago but I can't remember how I did it!

I want to enable the DVD drive to boot again on start up as I am reinstalling windows.

    Thanks for your help!

I don't think its possible to do disable the CD/DVD ROM from starting up, unless its from the BIOS menu. You can disable Autorun or Autoplay in Windows via the Regedit alright, but thats only for Windows. The system registry is one of the last things to load. Go into the BIOS menu (F2 or another key) when the computer starts and set the CD/DVD as the first boot device.

I tried that and it didn't work!

Where can I find that autoplay thingy in regedit? Perhaps its that that I am thinking about!

This article in the MS Knowledge base explains how to enable/disable autoplay. However this will make no difference to what your issue is as the above solution is just for Autoplay in Windows not at startup. I'm out of ideas if changing the boot device setup in the BIOS didn't work.

I changed the boot sequence in the bios and put the XP CD in and restarted the PC but it doesn't do anything!

Can you hear the CD being accessed before the HD, or does it go straight to HD?

I think I can yea! It comes up "press any key if you want to boot from CD" but I thought that would then bring up the options for format etc but it just loads to windows.

Well if it comes up with "press any key" it's def booting off the CD. Are you sure your keyboard is being detected?
