Each player gets a "Scalp Chip" which you keep until you are knocked out. The player who knocks you out keeps your "Scalp Chip" and cashes it in at the end along with any others he/she won.

I don't know what each one is worth as I've only played the Fitz scalps.

As for tactics, it doesn't change much except it encourages what might otherwise be a marginal call if there's a scalp at stake!
