Well that's what some extremests may say...

Anyway, I have in front of me a book titled "Become an Advanced Driver" which was given to me when I passed the Hibernian IAM Ignition course. It's about 80 pages of basically how to drive properly, no road signs or anything, just what to do in overtaking/turning/stopping situations etc. I thought it would be a good idea to scan the whole thing and put it up here but then I saw the bit on the book saying it's not to be reproduced without written permission of the publisher (Motorbooks International, London).

Just wondering, is this available anywhere else (legally) to save me the hassle of scanning all the pages and ripping my book apart and if not, what do you reckon the chances of getting permission are?

They should it compulsory to read a book like this before you get on the road. It's only 80 pages long and could save many lives.

Sorry copyright and patent holders have control of their rights. They use those rights to stop others using them.

Air bags, Seat belts, bicycle brakes that work in the wet are some examples of where the holders of the patents allowed others to use them when they did not have to.

Look at big pharma for an industry based on using IP rights to deny others access to cheaper products. There are many examples of important drugs being made public, but far far more where rights are jealously guarded.

BTW: The course notes you get on a FAS safepass course are copyright and you can't take them away after the course. This is very clearly a case where copyright is put above safety.

    Cormie -

You could buy Roadcraft, the UK police driver's handbook, which is what the IAM use. Here's a link, postage is free:http://www.play.com/Books/Books/4-/408162/Roadcraft/Product.html

The way I see it, scan away. You're not making a profit, and people are always complaining that people don't drive properly etc. You're doing a public service :)

He/she may not be making a profit but it could result in reduced sales of the publishers book, i.e. reduced profits. If you wrote a book and everyone scanned/photocopied it, I don't think you would be impressed. Motor Books International are a private profit based organisation, not a public service organisation.

Theft is still theft, even if you're giving the proceeds away. If people want to buy the book, they can.

Well in a way, distributing this book to people who will actually read it is good for the company becauuuuseee.... This may give drivers a good kick up the arse to go and do the advanced driving course, if they read the book, drive properly, take a day off work, they could save thousands over the years in insurance, IAM will be giving the book out regardless of whether the person has an illegally obtained one anyway, which could actually increase the amount of books IAM get off the publisher, which will increase the amount of people Hibernian insure and will increase overall road safety. The purpose of this post was to see if there was already a version online. It's an Irish version of the book (possibly the only version? I don't know) gardai, Irish roads etc etc.

My advice, if you want the book, go do the course, you'll improve your driving, get cheaper insurance and everyones happy:)

Can you please point out where he said he bought the book? He said it was given to him when he completed a course, which implies it's not for general sale. As it is, I have bought 3 books in total plus a DVD while I am learning to drive, at a total cost of around 55euro to myself.

Personally, I would love this book, as it's handy to have another reference.

(For the record, I have the Theory Test Book, Rules of the Road, some AXA sponsored book, ISM DVD and another Learn to Drive book)

Fire away then, and post it up on your own website, so the lawyers know where to find you when they come calling.

He was given the book when he did the course. He paid for the course. Therefore, he bought the book. Furthermore, the fact that he was given the book when he did a course in no way implies that it's not for general sale. The IAM do sell a book, How to be an Advanced Driver, also 80 pages, for STG£5.99. Here's the link, I'm guessing it's the same book:http://www.play.com/Books/Books/4-/308848/How_to_Be_an_Advanced_Driver/Product.html
