If you look at the front of the lens it usually gives the details just inside the filter mount.

You do realise that the number (52mm/55mm) is the diameter of the front of the lens, not the focal range of the lens?
Sorry if I've just insulted you, but I'm not sure what level of a photographer you are. :)

Both numbers are on my lenses. You have to know which numbers are which. Google is telling me that kit lenses are 18-55mm and 55-200mm lenses, though I'm a canon guy and haven't priced Nikons lately. If you have the camera/lens, you can just take a picture (zoomed in) and look at the EXIF information -- it'll have the focal length used in the shot.

    A picture speaks a thousand words! :)

    BTW
The intermediate focal lenghts are also marked on the barrel of the lens.

here is the specifications of your lens.

just in case theres any confusion its focal range is 18 - 55mm

the diameter of the lens is 52mm in other words the filter size for that lens is 52mm

    hope that helps
