I've often thought about what the greatest film of all time is...and also wht the greatest film soundtrack of all time is. I love movies, and I love movie soundtracks even more.

The more I think about it, the more I come back to this.

Once upon a time in America is the greatest film of all time, and its soundtrack, is the greatest soundtrack of all time.

    seriously????

Yeah, when you get a Leone movie you know you're gonna be safe with the soundtrack, but i found the movie slow and overlong, at some moments its difficult to watch and i just plain didn't like the actor who plays De Niro's character as a teen, he was irritating and unlikeable

You should pick up the Big Gundown by John Zorn - a tribute to Ennio, and Poverty, the main track from this flick is reworked on it. I think it is arguably the greatest, but then so is the godfather and apocalypse and one or two others. ennio actually played the music on the set while filming to get the emotions stirred up. Unfortunately Sergio never saw it released in his version, the released version was hacked up by the studio, and rumour has it the stress of what they did to his masterpiece nearly killed him. Im pretty sure just after he died the true version was put out

Unfortunately it's butchered to bits. Lets face it it's two movies squeezed into one. I always find this very unfortunate. Split it up into two movies and you have a rival for the GF 1/2, but the way it is it feels too long and incomplete. Still its brilliant. I wouldnt call it the greatest movie ever myself but I definately see where your coming from. The soundtrack being the greatest ever is a little closer to the mark. Ennio Morricone is a genius.

I have this on dvd and have seen it twice. I thought it was a great film right up until that infamous rape seen which I found just a bit too much. The rest of the film made for very uncomfortable viewing given my intense disliking of De Niro's character. Brilliant but flawed was my overall impression. The score was terrific.

Bumping this from way back but I have to post in agreement. It is my favourite film of all time. None of my friends like it at all and its rare to meet someone that has even seen it let along likes it. I also have the soundtrack which is a cracker. So yeah, great great film.
