Ghost or peeping tom

I have a situation, my parents bought an old house years ago in munster. It was said to be haunted, some people have seen the old woman who lived in the house sitting in the chair after she had died etc.
I've stayed/lived in it a good bit and never saw anything.
however here comes the footsteps with nobody there bit. I have heard many times footsteps outside the house at night, my Dad use to say it was an animal but it was an upright walk IMO. I never spoke about much it but recently my family have, and lots of us heard it.
Thing is that there is a living guy who has had some dealings in the area of the house before etc and it may be a peeping tom thing as he has been seen walking around very late at night (but not looking in windows just walking far from home with his car up on a ditch somewhere). I always thought it was a peeping tom, the guy is huge and I was happy to have him outside and me inside he has that big goofy weirdo super strength thing going, I'd need an elephant gun , anyway this is the country never the less. I would like to find out either way without letting everyone know etc. It would not look good in the area exposing this guy. Anyway it was only when my sister suggested a ghost that i considered it.

what do you guys thing would be the quickest way to find out, without him knowing I know. If it is him I might report him as he has a bit of a problem and prevention could be better then cure and I'd have a duty to other people to report it anyway
Also it could be a ghost that's why i posted it here as you guys have the tools etc

    Is CCTV an option?

a bit expensive the house is in the back end of the country, so watching it remotely over broadband etc would not be possible. I'd end up buying a camera and recorder just for that and I'm not really that interested. We might head down there some time to check it out but I'd like rule out a pervy reason first if you know what i mean

lads the problem with a camera is that he'll see it, but ok I'll get something sorted

You could always try the direct route, if someone could get talking to the guy and mention the footsteps and ask if he's ever seen anything around the house while he's been out and about. If it was him making them he might get the message and stay away. If not he might have some interesting stories around the place.

Damn you and your sensible ways, that put the idea of a bear trap out of my head!

Webcam tbh. Just get a really long wire, put it somewhere sheltered and look through it on your PC when there are footsteps.

    I don't see the need to get a webcam/camera.

If it is a peeping tom then a motion sensitive light should keep him at bay.

If you don't want the people to know why you're setting it up, use the excuse that the long dark winter nights will be setting in soon and it'd be handy for when people arrive late to the house.

    I don't get it.

Why can you not look out a window?

If it is because he is far from your house, you could get a high powered flashlight. We have one at home, don't think it cost that much.
It would not look good in the area exposing this guy.

I've never heard of an area which does not generally despise Peeping Toms, and you would most likely just scare him off by shining a light on him.

The peeping Tom thing sounds a bit wierd though.

If you think you have eliminated the dangerous human element and believe its a ghost then just go outside and look.

I've gone looking twice torinblue. The guy i think it is is huge with some mental problems, and the house is miles from anywhere, I'm a bit windy of him, nobody ever saw the guy btw, we all just heard the footsteps. I think he'd rather kill me than have me know its him lol, its a small tight community and he'd be related to lots of people there. I'd rather have a pic, anyway who knows it might be a GHOST!!!! but not in your opinion;)
