Considering buying new camera..

Well, I got accepted into the stillorgan college today to do Photography for the year, and I need to get a camera sorted for next Tuesday..

I have a 'retro' Zenit-b that's broken. When I wind it on, and click the shutter, it makes a slight click, quieter than normal, and I don't see the blind inside the camera move. And I have to press really hard to get the button to click too.

Does anybody know if this is fixable? If so, could I attempt it myself (I'm always taking things like this apart and they always work after) or is it something I should drop into a shop?

    It's this bad boy here..

I was considering buying a digital SLR if need be, but as you all know, they're pretty pricey, but if I need it, I'll get it.. If I'm gonna have to go this route, what do you guys reccomend?

    Cheers guys!

    Wes

Depends on budget really as to what any recommendation will be made, although the problem does sound easily fixable and if you're happy with your current set up there's really no reason to change.

Lovely camera btw. Very old school!

Now there's a blast from the past ! As far as taking it apart, I had a Zenit-E once that had the same problem and took it apart out of curiosity ... needless to say it never worked again :) That having been said, it was fascinating seeing the insides and all that wonderful Soviet technology!

You could check the adds in Amateur Photography magazine for repairs. UK based though.

I have a Pentacon 6TL, similar to yours, love it :D

Wez, if it's too much hassle to get it repaired, I have an old Praktika, looks to be of similar vinatge to that. It's in perfect working order - I used it for a course last year - and have the standard 50mm f/1.8 lens and a nice leather case. It's sitting in a box in a wardrobe in the spare room, so if you want it, you can have it. I'm sure it just wants a good home and to be loved...

If you got accepted to a school for photography, shouldn't you check with the school to see if they prefer film or digital? They're really different animals. Film has darkrooms and digital has massive photoshop-ish post processesing.

Also, I gave up my film camera BECAUSE of price. I figured I'd spend the cost of the body in development cost.

Well, he said that I need a film camera, and the brochure specifically talks about film slr's.. He was talking about getting a digital slr if I could afford one, and he seemed pretty sound, that he'd be flexible if I went the digital route, which I'm planning on doing eventually, but I really wanna build up experience with film, because I'm gonna be doing the development etc myself anyway, so it'll cut down on costs, and buying film + paper online saves a fortune..
