Does your television have to support a multi region dvd player?

Can anyone help? I have a Alba DVD65 multi region DVD player but have never played anything other than PAL Region 2 DVDs. I tried playing a Region 1 DVD today but wasn't successful. I changed the settings to NTSC and then to Auto and the player played the DVD both times but in terrible visual quality, though the sound was perfect. My television is very old and I began wondering if this was the cause of the problem. Does anyone know how I could fix this problem or do I need to buy a new television that supports this kind of DVD player?
    Thanks very much,
    Mairead

Yes it is probably the TV.

The correct setting on the DVD for R1 disks is PAL60, if that doesn't work then you will need to use a different TV.

Thanks for the reply. The DVD player only seems to have PAL, Auto and NTSC. Should there be more settings? I think myself that a new television might be in order, though do I need to be careful about the type of TV I buy? Could I end up with the same problem from a newer TV? My current TV is very old, it doesn't even have Teletxt.
Thanks for the help. I'm really very stupid when it comes to this sort of thing.

Did you have to enter in codes or something? The television is older than 5 years. I read that if the television starts scrolling the image and is in black and white that the television doesn't support NTSC dvds. I was hoping to find a way to make the television compatible but haven't found one yet. I think I will just have to keep looking or buy I new one.
    Thanks,

well if i play my csi miami Dvds (region one) i can play them with the screen on pal but does stutter a tiny and i can change it to ntsc and it still in colour. i thing the black thing refers the strength of the dvd player or scart lead . i got this special thing once for my PS2 to change region but it used to be black and white until i got this special scart lead which was gold. i think the gold scart lead are stronger than the silver. i think the beko tv are ntsc compatible but i'm not sure

region 1 ntsc encoded dvds need to be displayed at 60hz to be viewed properly where as the combination of a cheaper dvd player and an old tv can cause problems as the tv is only capable of displaying 50hz and the dvd player hasn't the ability to manipulate the video

I have a DVD player that has a built in NTSC<->PAL converter, Daewoo DVN-3100N.

well as i said above the i think the beko tvs are compatible cause we have on and you go through all the av channels until the s-video (think that what its called). s video is ntsc. it you query about ntsc tvs i'd go into an electrical shop. they may be able to help you.

Thanks for all the help. I think that the television is just too old. Probably time to get a new one that is NTSC compatible.
    Thanks very much again,

The DVD player only seems to have PAL, Auto and NTSC.

Try the PAL setting (if you haven't already - you probably have) [probably AUTO (selects based on what format video is on the dvd) is the menu's default???].
If that doesn't work.......go buy a new telly perhaps.
