Computer crashing

    Hello,

Lately (past week) my computer has been crashing a lot. Just blacks out and restarts again.
I've run AVG scans, Ad-ware scans and Windows Defender scans and they're not picking up anyhting. And I've uninstalled any programmes I've downloaded recentley.
Sometimes, when it starts up again it says that "We have encountered a serious error", sets up and error report and asks me if it's okay to send it off, and it brings me to a microsoft site saying (see the attatchment).
Says that a device driver was installed.

Last week, I had a friends over with a big 20GB or something mp3 player, but it wasn't one you plugged right int the computer, you put it in a docking station and that is connected to the USB thing. And when it was plugged in I noticed it came up in My Computer as a 'Hard Disk Drive' as opposed to a 'Device with Removable Storage'.

Anyway, I took soem music files from his mp3 player and he took files from mine, but I'm guessing it's not about that.

Has anyone experienced something like this before and moreimportantly, can ya help me? :o

Any help would be great use.
    Thanks

Are you running Windows XP? Restarting could be a few things like a corrupt driver or overheating.

    Yeah. XP.
    What does corrupt driver mean?
And I don't think it's becasue of overheating, it's been in the same spot for about a year now, and has only been doing it in that last week. Only since I plugged that mp3 player in.

That message refers to a particular file, more info here.I take it there was no driver required for the mp3 player, just plug it in?

No, you didn't plug it straight in, there was a holder for the mp3 and it sits in it and the holder is connected to the PC.
I think that's the "driver" they're talking about.

    Device driver: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Device_driver
Usually comes on a disc with the device. If its plug & play the device doesn't need a driver as windows will recognise what it is & will have a driver for it.

Did you install software for the mp3 player?
If so where did you install it to.
It sounds as if you ahve somehow replaced a an important windows driver with a driver from your software but that s just a guess, that would be pretty hard to do also without realising.

I don't think software wsa installed. Someting poped up alright, but my friend with the mp3 player said "Oh, don't mind that just exit it", so unless it automatically installed itself in the background. I didn't go through any installation setup thing if that's what you mean.

The something that popped up might of just been windows trying to configure your new device(in this case the docking station) if you plug a usb into a windows you will automatically get windows trying to install drivers for it. Some devices are instant such as mp3/cameras players etc, some devices like printers need specific drivers and software.

Not much help but FYI I've been having the same problem on and off for a while. I updated as many drivers as I could but it hasn't made any difference.

Could a marginally inadequate power supply also be a cause of this kind of problem?

I thought that at first too, but I'd say not since it's only been happening since I connected the mp3 player.

Would I be able to do anything about it in the device manager?
Are any of these disk drives strange looking? And not part of Windows?

If you have system restore turned on your computer you can try restoring the computer to a period before the MP3 player was connected or to period in which the computer was working correctly. You may lose some of your more recent intsallation, but it work its worth it. See the restore option at Start->Progeam files->accessories->system tools

I tried that, and it said it couldn't include Disk J because it was either excluded from the System restore, or removed or uninstalled.

Backup your data, format HD and reinstall windows.

As above, anything you do to try to fix it will more than likely break it.

Lil googling got this for windows XP:

Kmode Exception Not Handled (stop code 0X0000001E)

A faulty driver or service is sometimes responsible for this error, as are memory and IRQ conflicts, and faulty firmware. If the name of a file or service is specified, try uninstalling the software (or rolling back the driver if it's an upgrade).

If the Win32k.sys file is mentioned in the message, the cause may be third-party remote control software (discussed in Chapter 7).

This error can also be caused if you run out of disk space while installing an application or if you run out of memory while using a buggy application with a memory leak. Developers may wish to use the poolmon.exe utility to help isolate the problem, as described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q177415.

Robins advice here is sound (as usual :p ).

i had this problem a cxouple of years ago...realllly annoying, i got a new sound card, before i was using onboard sound, and it sorted itself out.

not saying this it is your sound card, but im just sayaing what i did.

imo: you should do what robin says, a clean install should fix it!
