The best societies

Which societies in Trinity are the best for having regular meetings, keeping members up to date with e-mails, friendly people etc? I've paid my 2 euros in the past for societies and never heard a thing from them. I like the climbing and VDP ones, what else is good? Anyone do yoga or capoeira?

    The PDs.

The P.D.s do Yoga? That would explain the relative lack of statements from McDowell & Co. advocating baby-eating and general evil of late. You sir have gone soft. You've lost my vote (and if the Tánaiste can't top the poll in her constituency, she needs all the votes she can get).

Physoc and Joly soc (geology) are the most fun departmental societies imho. You don't have to be a student for either of them and you get a lot of free "refreshments". ;)

You don't have to be a student of the society to join it, eh? That's a good thing. What kind of "refreshments" are we talking about?

    Tayto and minerals

Trinity has an alcohol policy which doesn't allow societies and/or events to be advertised by the promise of booze. So, you will receive 'refreshments' :)

The Kewl Society is one of the fastest growing underground societies (not sanctioned by the CSC).
The thread here was unfortunately closed last year due to fear that the nerds would be overthrown. And although they achieved in slowing the growth of the society, they failed to recognise the inevitability of the society and negociate while they still could.

If you wish to join, posters can be occasionally found in obscure places about twice a year.

Rifle, Fencing and Boat clubs are good fun..

The rifle club is pretty laid back, and is the top student club in the country.
Fencing is good craic as well

Boat club will get you uber-fit in no time!

Well they're all sports clubs as opposed to societies, but anyway.

While I don't doubt that it does; the thing that would turn me off it would be its (apparent) horrendous old-boyishness. I mean how else is such a small sports club the best "funded" in the college?

    Also it's blazer-squad central:

Well, you have the choral society and you've got the singers. I'm not entirely sure what the difference between them is.

and if you put the / before the word 'quote' it'll work for ya.

    The Library.

    Really.

The Doctor thing means that they actually spend time there. I know a second year who sails and does medicine, comes with a hot accent probably exactly what you're looking for. He can be found in the Library for a few hours a day.

scifi would be good, but their room is in like house 6, its up near all those arts types, massive hike from ham..be much handier if it was down our end...

House 6 is a pretty good location though, sure its up towards the other end but its right at the front arch, theres only 3 floors so its grand, it makes crashing on the couches much more satisfying :D

There are art types in sci-fi, aswell as science people, we all live in Harmony *interlocks fingers* :)

And while your at it you should probably join the Hist and the phil if only for the refreshments and freshers packs and the one debate/interview you are actually interested in seeing. That is unless you want to join and be an active member in which case you should also join

In general all the socieities are fun, especially if you are invovled. Obviously if you are involved in SciFi you will think it greats fun and so is the Hist if you are involved or enjoy their events. Its all a matter of getting involved

The number of very active 'FUN' societies changes every year. The best way to judge it is who is their earliest in the morning eg from 9-11 and who is still there on a Friday afternoon.

Generally, have a look at what there is, see if you like it, join and get involved. That is the most difficult part. Most societies, despite their best intentions, become quite cliqish. This obviously happens whenever a group of people really enjoy what they are doing and become good friends.

The most important thing to do is to go to events (the sign that a society does things) and get talking to people there. Find out if they have a first year rep position or committee for new members.

When I was a fresher I joined a lot of socieities and only joined the Hist at about 3pm on the Friday of Freshers Week! I was Auditor of the Hist last year and I can readily admit that it is generally a lot easier to get involved in the samller societies because they are smaller with more room for new ideas and people. Large socieities like the Hist generally have tighter strructures with less room for new members to organise events in 1st year. The socieities of the GMB used to be very cliqish and it depeneded on who you knew, had you done school debating etc. Its definitly not the case anymore as I can testify having never spoken a word in public until College.
However I recommend thouroghly that you join the Hist, do the Maidens debating competition and if you havn't spoken in public before do the debating workshops. Everybody needs to be able to speak in public these days.

Also, the Hist has a open committee for first years called the R&L for new members where you get to meet the different officers, find out how things work, organise parties, meet the guests before debates and interviews and organise your own debate after Christmas. Its a great way to make new friends and find out how College works. A lot of the people there will be involved in other societies as well.

Generally the Hist has something on every day with school debates on a Monday where you can judge and help; interviews, R&L meetings, workshops and forums on aTues or Thurs, debates and parties on a Wednesday and film screenings on a Thursday. On a Friday you have private members time and often a number of people will be heading off to compete in debating comps in other Colleges on a weekend.

The Conversation room is open every day with free papers and journals, the snooker rooms are open 11-7 with reduced prices if you are a member, and the Resource and Computer room is open til 9pm every night.

Most importantly 99% of active people in the Hist are active members of other socieities as well.

Well I must admit that there are a lot of different and various societies at Trinity from looking at the website.

Could anybody person tell me though what the LGBT Society is like? Because I'm gay and would like to meet other people like me as well! :)

Also, what are the Meditation and Yoga societies like? From the websites they seemed really interesting! :D

In fairness you could say that of the majority of societies. I think there's a "core group" of maybe 200 people who are really heavily involved in extracurricular stuff generally in Trinity. The same people keep popping up everywhere - SU, CSC, GMB, DUCAC, Pubs, etc etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,764 ✭✭✭shay_562

That's a cunning new alias you've got there, "CmcC". It's like Clark Kent putting his glasses back on - no one will recognise you now!

On the whole "which societies are good/active/friendly" thing, I have to pimp out Ultimate Frisbee (which, yeah, sports club, but whatever. You don't have to be all that sporty to play). Of all the societies I joined last year, they were easily the soundest, and will literally drag new members along kicking and screaming - this seems to be something that happens a lot more with smaller societies, which actually appreciate the membership a lot more. Regular e-mails (something the OP was looking for) and an active forum, plus training twice a week and regular events. And I'm not even a committee person there, so this pimping is coming from a place of goodwill and not self-interest.
    UU wrote:

It's good - one of the more active ones, with weekly events. The society room is open most afternoons, with free tea/coffee, and sometimes lollipops (the better to lure in freshers with) - one of the minions on the Freshers' Week stand will tell you how to get there. Plus, there is a forum and website that are relatively active, although technical difficulties (read: our webmaster graduated) have taken them down for now.

This is something I've noticed too. It's like a core of over-achievers who secretly run student life in college. In one sense, it's incredibly nerdy, but in another, it's kinda cool.

that might be true of the socities but the clubs are rather different, there is some degree of overlap(surfing/wind surfing[which last i saw was <5 people]) but for the most part the big club's groups are very different and seperated......

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I suppose it's harder to dedicate your time to several club activities rather to society activities. Hence less overlap.

/me Plugs SFSOC ( Science Fiction) And T:fm ( trinity Fm)

If You Like Movies, Games, free dvd rentals of Brand new Dvd's,nights out that outsell Trinity Su events (The Freshers ball V SFSOC's Halloween ball), Like Pub crawls, like Throwing up ( i'll explain later) The Do Join Sfsoc. SFSOC is was The 3rd Largest Paying society ( 4th if you include St VdP) after the phil and The Hist. Sfsoc isnt Just about science fiction, in fact, far from it. Yeah we do sciecne fiction nights ( show star-wars), but we also cater for other "niche" groups in Trinity. Last year for Example we had our legendary sex in the city night for the Ladies,Free "refreshement" were of-course Provided....

If you want a Society where you'll just be a Number, Join the Phil or the Hist.

if you want to be in a society where you'll have your name known, and A cool room to crash in.... Join SFSOC.

( BrenC and Call me al can add to this)

    T:Fm

why Join T:Fm? well, for a Student Radio Station, We are the BEST in the World, FACT*. Are you seriously telling me you know every member of SciFi soc? Considering the Hist got over 2000 members last year, and the Phil somewhere around 1500, the LawSoc got over 1000 paying members therefore by your figures agent smith, sci fi got over 1000.

You must be a popular person..in the less common use of the word... more than a number in my little black book...

I might be blowing my own trumpet... but we had over 200 people at 50% of our debates this year and a baseline attendance of 100, nevermind everything else we did.

Congrats on outselling SU last year. That was fanatastic for all concerned and a lot of people (especially me) were glad to see it after the attitude of Ents at the start of the year.

By the way, Sci Fi were great last year. Great bunch of people.

Out of curiousity, which societies were these and what was wrong with them? Not trying to start a thread of bitchery, but if we're pointing people towards good societies we can at least warn them away from bad ones too. Personally, I thought the sailing one was kinda crap - one text in mid-November to say training would be starting soon and I never heard anything again. To be fair, I wasn't exactly chasing them down either, but givne that it was the most expensive society I joined I wouldn't exactly recommend them.

No problem - unlike frisbee, I'm obliged to promote the LGBT whenever possible. And given that my BESS lecture hours aren't exactly strenuous, I do tend to spend a lot of time mooching in the soc room, so odds are I'll run into you there.

The lgbt society seems to work best for people who have had little or no contact with LGB people prior to starting college. As for what the people are like, check out the lgb forum on boards, it's much the same. Note that the only think you'll have in common with the majority of people in the trinity lgbt is your sexuality and that in all likelyhood you'll meet plenty of LGB students through other societies.
