€100 omaha hand from the Fitz

I played in the Fitz both nights over the weekend and one interesting hand sprung up in which I might have made a mistake. Let's here what ye think...

I'm in the game about two hours. I sat down with €2,000 and at this stage, I'm up to about €3,200. I raise to €75 two seats from the button with AsKcKdTc. Both players (an elderly lady (€1,500) and Bill Keeffe (€4,000)) to my left call. Now I'm first to act on the flop. It comes J high with 3 spades. I check as do both other players. A blank on the turn and I decide that this is the time to pick the pot up. I bet the pot (€250 ish) and the woman calls. Bill then raises to €1,200. I'm putting the lady on two pair (she's been playing crap like that all night) and Bill on maybe a K or Q flush and possibly a house draw. I thought about re-raising to represent the nuts flush but I was worried that even though it was another €1,800 ish to go, that the woman might still call (particularly if she had a set). I did think Bill was sensible enough to fold. In the end, I folded and so did she. Bill never showed but got really defensive when I said I had the As. I do think he might have had a made flush but it was the lady in between us that put me off the play.

Was my mistake not betting the flop or was it the right laydown given the woman's erratic play??

I'm not sure Bill can fold Flipper, unless the lady repotted it. You only have approx 1700 left to raise with and he was already made it 1200 meaning its just another 500 to him (or am I getting it wrong ?). Even if he thought you had the nuts he would have to call the extra 500, getting about 8/1.

Sry, just see you were up to 3200, only read the 2000 bit. I still would be slow to repot it, ok Bill could be good enough to lay it down, but the fact that you didn't represent it on the flop might make him call. Also there are too many players out there, and this lady sounded like one, who couldnt give a toss whats on the board or if you are representing the nut flush.

I assume this elderly lady you refer to is Colette Doherty. She does not do anything in this game without good reason and is one of the best players on this island.

Also, having watched this game more than I have played it over the years I believe there is a strong likelyhood you may have been called here even had you pushed as this game seems to less believe a raiser has the nuts unless the person pushing is a nuts only player. Also, in the eventually that Bill has a set (unlikely I admit, K/Q high flush is much more likely) he would certainly call a push.

if that lady was Colette Doherty, you can ignore my remarks ;)

no idea who she was. About 60-65, slight build with a huge diamond ring on her right hand. Kinda cranky too. She was losing about €3k at the time but I had seen her make some loose calls with draws on the turn etc but maybe my read was totally wrong.

Definitely Colette Doherty from that description, esp the ring. If she is cranky then God avoids her. It is funny when Dennis is on the table as he only refers to her as 'witch'.

That's Colette Doherty all right, best omaha player I've ever seen.

Maybe so. I think even if I eliminate her from the equation, would Bill have enough behind to make the call? With €1400 of his own money already invested, I think I would have a serious sweat waiting for him to laydown. Combine that with the fact that he hates me and I had a real problem!! My thoughts were that I couldn't lose what I didn't put in the middle and especially without a draw to a winning hand - obviously a K wouldn't win the hand. Worst case, he had a set and a solid flush (Q or K) but would be just over 4/1 to make his house. His call on the turn would be offering him nearly 5/2.

Collette is one of the most consistent winners in that game, and also one of the best players.

I very much doubt that Bill O'Keefe would have folded to your raise. And he hates everyone, it's not just you.

As a matter of interest, why don't you just use your real name on the waiting list board?

You most probably have the best hand preflop but all u have now is a pair of kings. Best you can hope for is a King on the river to even dream u have the best hand. Reraising Bill here wouldnt even come into my mind. U asked the question with your pot bet and you got your answer. Youre defo good enough to put all your money in when you have a hand or monster draw and get paid so i'd be waitin til then. A jack and 3 undercards with 3 spades and the betting u decribed makes me think that the blank on the turn wasnt so much of a blank. I'm guessing it gave Bill trips with his flush. Easy laydown in my book

If you dont bet the flop, then I'm not too happy about betting the turn, and I sure as hell dont like shoving.

nothing personal just the game has been quiet lately.

About the hand I think the way you played it is good, I often check the flop with the nut flush here as well as with the lone A. On the turn you have run into too much resistance and are getting called by a big set and maybe a smaller flush especially if you have been speeding or people are stuck.

    Quote of the day, I lol'd. :D

I think I have more respect for Collete Doherty than any other player in Dublin. I tangled with her a few times in the odd tounament she does play, and her general play and lack of fear is scary sometimes.
