Well? We're supposed to be all snobby in Trinity so lets talk about why we're better than everyone else :p

Is it the location? The fact that its the hardest college to get into? The way its recognised around the world?

Also, whats the worst thing about trinity?

Is it really the hardest to get into? It has a great location all right, but so does RCSI and some of the DIT colleges.

For me the best part of going there was cold drinks outside the Pav a week before my exams.

The worst was doing my finals in the Exam Hall (very pretty interior) and some American tourists burst in and started taking photos. Not too great for the concentration!

I think David means that its the hardest to get into point wise.

Was in the exam hall today actually, I got fairly distracted during an exam and started looking around. I know people who slag off TCD for having pics of the Queen up (referring to QE2, i think) but QE1 was up there in the Exam Hall allright, in all her queenliness (or some word like that)

I know, I just hadn't realised the points were higher for everything in Trinners. I knew ppl that went there cos they didn't get their 1st choice. Ah well, congrats to all you brainy ppl starting there!

Hmmm.. location, pav, country's 'premier' university (good for ol Pgrad abroad), the hutz, its character (UCD is just a factory), the women (there's an international touch ;) ), the cricket pitch on a warm summers evening (with a 6-pack of bavaria of course), the sports clubs, the faculty support (its a very student friendly college) and most of all the friends I've made there...

It's stigma, the BESS faculty and the way the exams are REALLY hard (don't tell me they're the same as other colleges, I could do (and did) my mates maynooth 2nd yr phys paper while pissed).

    Hmmm....

Compared to others it is mate.. I've heard some horror stories from UCD, DIT and NUI may. If your willing to look there is help here. Staff in any faculties I've looked have been nothing but obliging and went well outta their way sometimes.. (you gotta ask nicely tho)

Can't disagree with the good points but I thought everyone loved the Bess students, at least as a bit of eye candy. We called them the Beautiful People.

The reason Trinity is ment to be the best is the fact that every other college has an inferiority complex. WE trinners have no superiority complex. Its just all them bitter folk else where I tells ya.. ;)

Favourite Thing about trinity: "The mad auld folk like Matt-the-Jap, R. P. MacDowell and the goblin that lives in the HLs"

Worst thing: "When there is a student protest and all those bitter(DIT, UCD) colleges turn up in front square and annoy everyone(probably something to do with the testosterone imbalance in their own colleges and the fact that TCD is 60% female)"

    Also

The first day of being a trinity student walking into front gate and into front square was better than casual sex!!

Is Matt the Jap still there? I made the BIG mistake of sitting at "his" table in the coffee dock when I was in 1st year. I lived in terror of him ever since. But I heard they'd kicked him out, bless him.

In the end it all depends on who you ask for help...I had a lecturer who was asked a question during a tutorial by a student who was obviously struggling with a question. The lecturer started accusing the student of not attending lecturers. I'm unsure whether the student did that or not, but the lecturer jumped at that conclusion immediately and stated his accusation. Then later during certain faculty meetings, he was one of those who was vehemently opposed to more "student friendly" motions etc.

Sorry just dealing with internal bull**** does my head in...I'll stop waffling...

Also for people who haven't started yet they can say why they picked trinity.

Last year Matteo Matubara fell by hard times. After serial attacks on students and staff in the arts block with his mighty stick he was barred from the college buildings. This ment that he had less exposure to students, staff and friends that would usually buy him food. His health suffered as a result and was hospitalised for a short period due to malnutrition. After lobbying by friends and several articles in Trintiy News he was allowed to return to college as long as he would refrain from beating people with his stick and other samurai related antics...

i picked trinity as it's the only place that does my course!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

There was an article in the trinity news just after he was barred from the college iirc. was just prior to the open day (read about it in my free copy of the trinity news).

must seek out this guy, i'm Veeeerrrry intrigued :)

Ah I'm glad. I hadn't seen him on campus for at least a yr. He's a nice contrast to the pretty scenery and the "celebrity" types (think Brendan Kennelly) that wander around.

I picked Trinity becuase i could oly do my course there or in DCU. Anyone I know who's gone to TCD has never had a bad word to say about it :D
I'm really intriuged by this Matt-the-Jap guy, although admittedly a teensy bit afraid too..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 649 ✭✭✭strawberry

It all went downhill last year when they banned Matt the Jap from the arts block. BESS students got far too comfortable in the coffee dock  I think the risk of being swipped by a little old man with a cane keeps everyone on their toes, in a good way :D

Also, the law faculty are just about the cudliest bunch of lecturers you could find anywhere (with some exceptions).

    Favourite thing about Trinity: Hmm.

There are too many. It's all brilliant. Apart from having to do coursework of course. They should put up a warning somewhere:

WARNING: You are also expected to do some work here and not just enjoy yourself.

is it a big deal to re-sit exams no?

Well its tradition for some of us at this stage...

One thing which is good about college, is that it costs nothing to repeat. Well bar destroying two summers in a row, that is.

The only bad thing is it wrecks your summer and you just get a pass for that year. You don't get a first etc.

Yea I was in with you guys. You where doing a test for Mr Analcockram (actual name)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Chick

Yeah hadnt thought of it kinda taking over your summer... if you only get a pass instead of a first, do all those things count towards your degree at the end?so sorry to keep asking questions, but ive no idea how all of that stuff works im utterly clueluess :S

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 761 ✭✭✭PrecariousNuts

I think it's only 3rd and 4th year exams that count towards the degree.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Chick

oh ok good to know thanks a mil :D

There are rumours that it does count...when you are to pick subjects/assignments for 4th year (in engineering for example), what do they have to base things on? Hardly your leaving cert results! You've to pick/ask at the end of 3rd year, and rumours say that they pick the 2nd year results as a basis.

Also, in 2nd year, you are put into groups which are defined by a smart person (who is top of the list) and hence they are distributed evenly afterwards. Apparently by random, apparently not. Who knows? All I know is that I was last in my group and I did repeats last year.

Another point, some employers later on are snobby. I've heard my sister comment on how they are always looking for results from previous years, not just your finals (she's a solicitor now). Makes sense in some ways, but I still don't like it...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 761 ✭✭✭PrecariousNuts

A bit of incentitive to work hard I guess

Well some of us still have to learn...

Oh yeah something else: Though most courses will try and make sure everyone who applies for a certain stream gets that stream, it will have to come down to some rationale to let people into that stream. Science, in third year, for example. You may or may not get what you're looking for through the amount of work you've done so far. Bit of a kick in the nads.

There is no quota system for engineering. If oyu want to do something, and provided it's still offered, you can. If the whole year what to do civil, then so be it. If five people want to do computer eng then so be it. You choose what stream you want at the end of second year. In first second third and forth year your put into groups, can't really remember them being defined by smartest first. Anyway what does it matter where in the group you come?
