Things you need to know about boards

I have for some time thought my workmate was the laziest person I have ever met. She never seems to do any work and yesterday I found out why - boards.ie. She spends all her time on this website. She encouraged me to register and join with the masses in discussing, arguing, complaining etc. So I have. But what are the tips regular oldies can give me?? What are the things I need to know about boards.ie? Oh, and one other question, why is it so popular?? :p

For every 10 minutes I work, I reward myself with 2 hours of boards

Nothing really to give advice about, just don't post like an idiot

EDIT: Actually that is a lie, I forgot I was in AH. Post away like an idiot

Read the Charters in every forum so you don't piss us mods off ;)

It's a place for a wide variety of different people to come together to discuss everything and anything (as long as it doesn't break the rules). Just look at the amount of different forums on this website to see all the specialised discussion topics. There is something for everyone and usually if you have any questions, odds are there will be someone to answer it.

Post away like an idiot and get yourself banned. Oh welcome btw. :) Have a look at the Newbies/FAQs forum under Sys.

    Bedhead
Go to the system menu (top right of your screen)
click on Newbies/FAQ - all your answers are there.
Might I just echo Giblets comment, that reading the Charter of each forum will keep you out of trouble ;)

    I'm not much better :D

    /edit
    oops

What you'll come to realise quite quickly is that in some forums, the mods can be irresponsible with their powers and prevent free speech, discussion and debate. In short, some of them seem to be intolerant of ideas and points of view which don't correspond to their own. Particularly in the political forums, if I'm not mistaken. There has been a discussion about this on usenet arising out of a recent legal action against Boards.

I'm not suggesting for one moment that Giblet, quoted above, is dictatorial, despotic, tyrannical, draconian, oppressive, repressive, illiberal or undemocratic.

    Teh naked boobies tbh.

Don't ask questions that you feel may have been asked already.
Watch your spelling, people will annoy the hell out of you for that.
    Grammar (see spelling comment)
Don't post comments in the 3rd person, 1 of thems is enough.

Try not to become one of those whingers who complains about Boards all the time, even though they use it for free all the time for free.

You are here long enough to know that this is a privately owned site which has quite vocally stated that there is no such thing as carte blanche free speech here.
The owners of this site can be held responsible and accountable for what you say, hence they reserve the right to remove anything that may offend.
Once you learn that, things should go smoothly for you.

That usenet dicussion is a load of balls and it's clear they haven't a clue what they're talking about. "I got banned from adverts for accidently breaking the rules lol". Accidently, as in, didn't read the Charter. And of course Mr. Chip on his shoulder "I can run it better if I only had the chance, oh and the balls" Howard 9.

if you are banned from any of the forums, don't throw a hissy fit. it won't get your ban lifted.
    politeness will get you everywhere.

or you could throw a hissy fit in feedback and we can all have a laugh.

DO you guys have real friends in the outside world??? Or are all your friends anonymous internet names?? I don't want to turn into that - I LIKE the outside world. Sometimes.

We were recently wired directly into boards and the system, :) its tough, any bad thoughts I have I get a *ouch* shock to the *ouch* head. :(

Bedhead: Despite what some people think, we all take part in the real world and have real friends. There are often gatherings or boards beers where members get together and have a laugh, have a look under Sys->Events for more info. Anything else you need to know, just ask. :)

So there you go Bedhead. In one thread you have found out why Boards is great. The fact that its not work, the fact that these people are irish, and often get just as pissed off as you do. The fact that nobody has to even like you for your post count to soar and soar and soar.
And then theres the other side of the boards.
Hughchal earlier hinted at something we arent allowed talk about for fear of.... them.
    hughchal wrote:

Ahahahahahahahahaha. Brilliantly brilliant. I love this man.
No offence Giblet. You have never put a steering wheel down my pants, but as soon as I went on boards I realised the main reason NOT to be here is mostly because of SOME overbearing mods, basically the equivalent of bouncers in a country night club.

This last line of your post is one of the most absently sinister things I have read on a public forum. You sound like a demented scientist enraged that her "creations" arent acting right.

And I have to say I agree. The amount of editting, tampering, booting, post deleting is absolutely ridiculous. Of the type that I have never encountered on any other forum.

    Oh and one more thing.
    **** the charter.

You obviously don't use many forums. On Something Awful, for example, you can be banned for using the wrong thread icon, and you have to PAY to use that.

The bigger and more general the message board, the more control it needs.

OK thats fair enough, and I realise that ye are there for a reason and most seem to be a good laugh and do a good job of moderating. But I have seen so much casual booting of people for random reasons, it just seems ridiculous. If you post up an opinion contrary to a moderator at the wrong time of day you can get banned on a technicality, purely becuase the mod is pissed off. And I understand that people get pissed off too, but just cos a guy with a gun gets pissed off doesnt mean he should shoot someone. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, but power to mod can turn people into gollumesque children with huge chips on their shoulders.

The reason why human moderators are used and not a roving bot booting people based on string searches is because humans have the ability to assess semantically what someone is saying. Its possible to call someone a name and be joking, but as it is technically against the charter, people can get booted for calling someone a lucky sod.
If u are going to give power to ban to so many people maybe some of them should have a bit of an attitude adjustment.

(I dont need an attitude adjustment because i have no power here though I realise I am pissing ye off mightily.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,989 ✭✭✭✭Giblet

Nah not pissed off. I'd just like to say that a lot of the time, people who are banned have a history the normal user isn't aware of.

    Hi Bedhead!
One thing they will not tell you about is the secret handshake that you need to learn if you are to survive boards.ie, especially AH. Oh, you want to know how to do the handshake? I cannot tell you because it's a secret, and if I told you, I would have to... Well, you know.

*Blue turns up collar, pulls down hat, puts on Raybans, shifts eyes from side-to-side, and sneaks off into the darkness of boards.ie*
