fear of ghosts

why is it that we are afraid of ghosts? I mean I have seen no evidence to suggest they can harm us in any way. Is it because we don't know enough about them?

I ask because I work in a pub that is supposed to be haunted by one ghost, the ghost of a man that hung himself. There was a little room upstairs where he did it and no-one could stand being in there for more than a few seconds, whether they knew of the tales or not. they said they could feel something spiritually *no pun intended* and had to get out. When I look at a picture of a 'ghost' I get a strike of fear in my chest, as I am sure a lot of you do. But why?

I've seen a few spooky things in my life, and to be honest, I was not actually particularly fearful when I saw them. More intrigued that anything, and one occasion, I felt an overwhelming sadness.

The only time I did actually feel fear was on an occasion where whatever the heck it was started to interact with my surroundings in a very violent manner, but that specific scenario would have made me nervous whether it were a ghost, or a living person. On that occasion, I didnt actually "see" anything, it was just the physical interaction with my surroundings.

I'm sure if I had an encounter like those you see in films with truly horrific looking things (I'm thinking Hellraiser and such films, not a ghost I know, but that type of image is what I'm aiming for) then I probably would be petrified, but the ones I saw gave me no reason to be fearful.

Asking why we fear these things would probably get a better answer in the Psychology forum as theres nothing paranormal about fear.

Seeing as you asked her though I will give my 2c.

Like Archeron, I dont usually get scared (see Scraggy) but I can see that apart from the whole "ARGH! ITS A GHOST!!" thing it would be the seeing something unexpected that would get people e.g. walking into your kitchen and seeing someone when you know you are the only person in the house.

Then again some people get scared by the idea of ghosts, that as you said would be fear of the unknown.

I agree with 6th that its probably something hardwired into our psyche, and explainable that way, in the same way that we have a lot of inbuilt or subconcious fears and patterns related to other things.

I have also heard the theory posed that the spirit beings or whatever you choose to name them 'get too close' to our own aura, and we find this uncomfortable and instintively scary.

My 2c? I think its a learned response, in part, in the same way as we 'learn' to be scared of spiders, snakes or flying. It can be unlearned too, as can any phobia.
