probably not the best forum to ask this in put anyway :). I got an offer from the cao on monday, for it blanchardstown (my first pref), however the more i think about it the more i dont want to go there. Its too far from me and the lack of a social life is offputting. So now i would like to change to dcu (my second pref), both courser were computer apps and the one in blanch actually needed more points than dcu so i know that i meet the requirements.

Only thing is ive accepted the blanch offer, so my question is now how do i go about switching or am i too late. Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

    thanks:)

afaik, once you've accepted all offers below the one you accepted become closed off.

But that might have changed since. Contact CAO, see if they'll let you switch bakc, provided the corse you're looking for hasn't filled, you should be fine.

Though I could well be wrong.

As far as I can remember once you've accepted first offer you do not receive any further offers, unless one of your higher placed choices becomes available i.e. second round points are reduced and you now reach the admission level.

Unfortunately as Blanch was your first choice and you got the points for it you will not be offered a place in DCU.

I would advise you to contact the CAO and inquire as to whether there is the possibility of join the CA course in DCU if there are unfilled places, but it is quite likely that you will have to reapply to the CAO next year for the DCU course.

Lastly, try not to be so negative about the course in Blanch, every college has its good and bad points, don't let distance put you off, there are ways around this, plus commuting can be a good time to catch up on sleep/music/reading. Where abouts are you based that you feel it is too far away? I would suggest, if the CAO says you cannot move to DCU this year, that you go along to Blanchardstown course and give it a lash for a while. To the best of my knowledge if you really hate it after giving it a go and you decide to drop out after a certain period I don't think you lose your fees for the year, but try not to think of dropping out etc. yet.

Is there the possibility of moving out and living closer to the college? Also, you will have a social life, there's always someone with a couch/floor/spare bed who would be willing to let you kip there after a night out.

yep..thats right..i nearly had the exact same problem as you..i had blanch down as first pref as well and dcu as second..and then when i got my offers both of them for blanch i didnt accept any of them and still havent..instead i am waiting till end of august to get my second round offer from dcu for the computer applications course which they told me i would be getting..

but before all this i was perfectly happy going to blancherstown and was planning to go there from christmas..its not al lthe bad its a very new facilty with state of the art labs and stuff..and there may not be a big social factor but that doesnt mean there isnt any..

i wouldnt say you could get into dcu now unless you contact cao and tell them all ur info and they may be able to sort you out..because 300 places is alot of places to fill up for a course (comp apps) so there might always be a chance there even with the courses popularity and the big maths failure rate this year wil help ya

If all else fails just keep checking the vacant places page on the cao, applying for one of them voids any other acceptances so if there's space you could still get moved to the course you want

They won't fill it up however they are also very unlikely to reduce the points in the second offers due to the negative image it may portray on the course/university in general. :o

haha..didnt know they would act like that...thats very sly.. :D but its a good point..

they rang me up a few times lately saying there definetly offering me a place but gotta wait till second rounds so im almost sure that im in.. :D

because turns out to get into blanch i would have to get back to cao and change a load of stuff just to get into the comp science course..and why do that when the best software course in ireland is offering me a place :)

thanks for the advice, ill email the cao and check the vacant places. Probably should have mentioned im in Santry so Dcu would have been dead handy, but sure worst comes to the worst and i cant change ill give blanch a go and hopefully seek a transfer the following year.

Ill let ya's know how i get on

    thanks again:)

yeah definitely check the vacant place..
    I've just check it..
There's no comp app there for dcu..
just in case check it again if it changes

I think there's one in maynooth mixed with mathematical science.. sounds scary :D

There's two courses for common entry engineering for DCU..
I'm surprise there's only two engineering on vacant place..
    Normally there's more..
I guess engineering is picking up again this yr??

    We'll see next yr..
Hope you get what you want..

I think that there are still places available in the CA course for anyone who satisfies the min. entry requirements. (6 LC subject passes to include at least 2 at honours level, 300 points, C3 in ordinary maths or D3 in higher level and a pass in either Irish or English)
