Looking for a laptop... portability a priority

I'm looking for a laptop for college, basically for handling Excel spreadsheets as well as other graphing software such as Prism etc. In addition, I'll be using it for a small bit of Photoshopping and as a storage medium for photos from my cameras when I'm on the go, away from my main workstation at home.

My budget is under €1500 ex vat, and my main priority is mobility. A 13 or 14 inch screen would be ideal, 15 is probably too big and 12 is too small.

Dual-core is essential due to number crunching and photoshop, and also 2gb of RAM would be very useful, for similar reasons.

Additionally, bluetooth, wifi, at least 80gb HD and a light notebook (e.g. around 3kg, preferably lighter) would be all essential features.

    Any ideas?

The Sony Vaio SZ range of laptops sound perfect for you.

    Extremely thin.
Come with Intel dual core Core Duo processors.
Comes with two graphics cards that you can switch between,
Intel onboard for good battery performance and Nvidia for gaming.
Available in different specs for different prices:
    1.6 - 2.2 MHz Core Duo Processor
    512MB - 2GB RAM
    60GB - 100GB HD

I was going to say the Q30 as well. Dell have (or had) this model as well, just repackaged with the Dell logo.

Edit: Just looked at their site, its the Latitude X1.

  • just had a good look at the specs there, that particular one has only 512 mb ram at 333mhz..

probably would be better off looking for one with a bit more ooomph

even though i find the sonys a little overpriced, the SZ2HP/B looks pretty good, might go for that. I think the Q30 (and X1) might be a bit too small for me.

    Cheers for the info.

Don't rule out HP - dv1365ea (the one I'm using right now!)

It's a 14.1" widescreen laptop - keeps a large keyboard (very important for me as I take lots of notes in college) - might be useful when viewing excel spreadsheets.
