Dell Dimension not working !!!!

My father bought a dimension 1100 on 13th March last and it was delivered within a day. He didn't go for the warranty upgrade and just bought the standard which I think is only 3 months.

The machine is not used very often as my mother and father are like so many others not very techinically minded so all its used for is a little web browsing and solitaire and would often be left for days on end with no use.

The other day when I arrived in from work my dad called me and said the computer had stopped working, he had turned it on and got a smell of smoke and then the machine stopped working. We haven't been able to boot it up since.

I was wondering if anybody else has this problem before and how was it sorted and what was Dells take on it considering there was only the basic limited warranty taken out on this machine.

This cannot be right a new machine being f***ed after only 5 months of very limited use, can it????

check the service tag number on the dell website and see what if any warranty you have.Sounds like the power supply could have blown if you smell burning...but could be other things too.
Plenty of machines die sooner than 5 months, client bought new D410 costing €2500 with bells and whistles , 2 weeks later the motherboard died and had to be replaced...so always get a good warranty! They're worth their weight in gold!

Was this a Outlet purchased machine?

Check it out with your local Citizens Information Centre as our muppet banana republic government has not made any provision in law for showers like this.

Perhaps this should be moved to Consumer Issues. You didn't get the extended warranty so theres not a whole lot you can do, maybe someone who may have been in a similar situation can help.

Sounds like the power supply to me, it happened to my sisters PC, they just bought a new PSU and installed it themselfs. That's the best thing about PCs you can service them yourself quiet easily. My sisters boyfriend had never used one up until he met my sister now he knows just enough to get himself in trouble.

This kind of thing can happen quiet easily but it's rare for dells their usually fairly robust. If you open it up you'll proably be able to tell whats gone.

Thanks for the replies guys, I have just been onto someone in dells technical support and explained what happened and they are replacing the hard drive because there was a burning smell from it. It restores my faith in Dell customer support.
