    Hi everyone,

I got my first airsoft pistol today. Arrived in the post with no duty charges. It's a Western Arms Beretta M9A1. The only problem is that I got it from Hong Kong so the instructions are in Japanese. Does anybody know if English manuals are available online? I also ordered some BBs and a BB container. I've ordered gas from the UK but it hasnt arrived yet.

I'm very impressed with the gun. Its seems to be full metal as it is quite heavy. Alot heavier than I was expecting. If anyone can give me any tips about the gun it would be most helpful :)

It looks nice, cant tell you anything about it though, sorry. I take it that it's a blowback? Is it fully automatic, no? What fps has it?

I was told it was 280fps. Semi-automatic. I got it from UNcompany in Hong Kong. It cost about €150. I cant wait to get the gas so I can start shooting it.

What type of gas did you order for it? Generally the best summer gas is 134a.

    Lovely lookin pistola!

Once I start workin full-time, I'm gonna invest in a gun. I'll most likely get an AEG, but if I can afford it I'll get a pistol too.

Can't wait for this sport to take off :)

Nice pistol man. You might be able to e-mail the people you bought it from or the manufacturers for help, its not a manual but its better than nothing.

What do these guns shoot and how far, are they like pellet guns or more paintball sort of stuff? They look good anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,509 ✭✭✭SpitfireIV

Nuttzy, the guns in question fire 6mm pellets, little plastic balls. They vary in weight etc, each weight giving a different performance. Currently once the guns doent exceed 1 Joule (328 feet per second) they are classed as toys, so therefore the pistols, smg's etc that you see here will range from about 200-310fps.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 960 ✭✭✭Harekin

Actually they fire 6mm BB's (bullet balls). If they exceed 1 Joule (328feet per second WITH a 0.2g bb) they are considered lethal weapons.

Pellet guns are just the lower powered guns that many people would buy in Spain or something. Whereas Airsoft guns are more powerful and alot better quality. And most of them look as realistic as real guns.

i thought when someone said "pellet" gun, it refered to an airgun? as in the ones that fire lead pellets

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,857 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

no no, "pellet guns" are airsoft guns, but they'd generally be the one-shot, spring-powered guns that, as strawbs said, people buy in Spain on holidays, etc. When someone says "Airsoft guns", as opposed to pellet guns, they're talking about the same sort of thing (fires 6mm BB pellets), with some major differences (usually automatic, gas or electric powered, much higher velocity, etc.). "Air guns" are totally different -- they fire lead projectiles at much higher velocities than airsoft guns, and you need a licence for them. They're not used in airsoft, cos they'd f*ck a brother up!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 960 ✭✭✭Harekin

Actually a "pellet gun" is a slang term for an airgun that scum-bags adopted for springers. Air guns are different to airsoft guns cos they fire at around, 14J instead of <1J?

put "pellet gun" into wiki. you will see that yes, it does refer to an airgun. it only makes sense. airguns fire pellets. therefore making them a pellet gun....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,857 ✭✭✭✭Dave!

maybe in a technical sense, but when someone says "air gun", they're not referring to airsoft, so let's stop being pedantic.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 960 ✭✭✭Harekin

A pellet gun is a high powered air gun. However scumbags heard this, didnt know the difference between it and a cheap springer...hence them calling them (springers) pellet guns.

That's not what BB refers to. BB refers to an old kind of .22 calibre round that used very little propellant (just the primer if I remember right) and which was also used in shotguns. It predates what we think of as "BB guns" by a fair margin.
If they exceed 1 Joule (328feet per second WITH a 0.2g bb) they are considered lethal weapons.
No, if they exceed 1 joule, they are considered firearms and are subject to the firearms acts 1925-2006. "Lethal weapon" is a term often used in the acts, but it has no definition as there is no legal definition of lethality save a rather odd one from the UK where it was asked if an airgun, no matter how badly misused, could be lethal - if the answer was yes, it was classed as a lethal weapon. Thing is, the judge didn't ask if that lethality came about from firing the airgun or from beating someone over the head with it repeatedly...

"Pellet gun", like "BB gun" doesn't really have any real definition.
And airguns for target shooting tend to be between 5 and 7 joules. Hunting airguns are much, much higher but really are very different beasties.

I was talking about the context of airsoft. In airsoft its a BB which in the context of airsoft is a bullet ball. According to studies conducted in Scotland the lowest possible lethal strength is 1J, and thus was adopted in British Law. However now they say it is more around 3-4 but I dont see them changing the law to reflect this...and as far as the definitions go, I was talking about in the context of airsoft...this is an airsoft/paintball forum...right?

While it is often stated that "BB" stands for "ball bearing", this is not the case. The original BB guns used the BB sized lead shotgun shot, midway between B and BBB size. BB shot was nominally .180 inches (4.52 mm), but tended to vary considerably in size due to the high allowable tolerances for shotgun shell use. Around 1900, Daisy, one of the earliest makers of BB guns, changed the bore diameter to .175 inches (4.45 mm), and began to market precision made lead shot specifically for BB guns. They called this "air rifle shot", but the "BB" name was already well established, so everyone kept calling the guns "BB guns" and the shot "BB shot" or just "BBs".

Airsoft guns are also commonly referred to as BB guns, as they also shoot spherical projectiles through a smoothbore barrel. However, airsoft "BBs" are 6mm in diameter (.24 inches), made of plastic or other non-metallic materials, and are designed specifically to be less than lethal.

basically bb stands for neither "ball bearing" nor "bullet ball", it is just a carry on from the original BB sized lead shotgun shot

Are either of these any good. Looking to get a rifle, preferably a Steyr replica if any of them are decent. Can spend more than that, don't want to fork out on shipping though.

I might be placing an order from UNCompany soon pending feedback from others. If I am I might be able to put yours in with mine and split the delivery? Check out what they have. http://www.uncompany.com
Check out the Tokyo Marui's. A top spec AEG with battery and charger including delivery and potential customs worked out at about 310euro in total.

The military one is sold out at the moment, know anywhere else that would have it? What are you looking at getting yourself?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 960 ✭✭✭Harekin

The Military Steyr AUG is actually out of production...ie. they dont make it anymore! You can however just order the Civilian one and get a red-dot scope for it or something. Im getting the TM P90 TR w/ battery, charger and red-dot scope. Costs around €310 including shipping and possible customs charges. WAY cheaper than most places in the EU.
Ill probably be ordering next week depending on what the pay-slip says!
