Dell's Mistake

I'm just after getting a system replaced by Dell. They've given me a Dimension 9150 as a replacement to an 8400. Now there are a couple of problems with it.

First when it boots up an error message comes up saying there is no CPU Fan detected. Fine Dells don't have cpu fans, they have passive cooling(or at least the 8400 had). However, after a few minutes the computer shuts down, is it the CPU overheating?

Also CPUZ is reading the processor as an Pentium D940 instead of a D945, is this correct, or could CPUZ be mistaken?

There are fans on the newer Dell's -they are quiet though. Sounds like it's overheating - call Dell and explain.

Not certain about the CPU - is it the latest version of CPU-Z?

Some dells do have CPU fans, others direct air from the case fan onto the CPU. Either way the BIOS would be configured to allow for this, or the case fan could be connected as the CPU fan, if it's giving you an error saying that there is no fan detected then there is a problem somewhere that needs fixing.

I got it all sorted. Case fan wasn't connected(d'oh), CPU-Z wasn't up to date, they never sent me the correct sound-card, and now I'm trying to remove all the crap they put on it.

Try the Dell decrapifier. Although personally the first thing I'd do is to wipe and repartition HD and install windows. Best way of getting rid of all the crap for sure.
