Haven't actually heard the broadcast myself, but apparently on Talksport Quinn just announced he will step aside as Manager of Sunderland and get someone else in to do it.

This follows on from tonight's 2-0 loss to bottom of the league Bury.

    Ouch.

Hes obviously a better buisnessman than manager, cracking investment buying Sunderland.

He has someone described as world class who will be in place by the weekend apparently (NOT Peter Reid!).

Were Sunderland not bottom to begin with (symantics I know, but still.) Actually, was it not a cup game? I assume bury are bottom of the football league altogether?

Bury are bottom of League 2, with zero points, and a goal difference of -7

    O'Leary?

    O'Leary?

Surely even in his desperate hour , Niall Quinn wouldn't refer to O'Leary as "what we consider to be World Class"..?

I saw him interviewed on Sky Sports, he said it is going to be a big announcement, and one that will give the supporters reassurance of the future that Quinn and his investors have in mind for Sunderland. Those are big words.

    :\

would be a nice opportunity for o'leary to show he doesnt need lots of money to do something with a team.

he wont get another premiership job anytime soon imo

I can see the Sunderland fans being really disappointed this weekend. World Class is a big term to be using. My guess is Glenn Hoddle.

I dunno i say fair play to Quinn for two reasons
    1. He gave it a go.
    2. He knew when it wasnt working and straight away sacked himself.
Lots of people in footbal would imo try to turn it around when it wasnt working rather than admit defeat.

I look forward to seeing a World Class manager in charge of Sunderland.

I wonder what Niall's definition of "world class" is. Personally I think it has to go on achievements. My criteria would be:

    - 3 league titles (esp if England, Spain or Italy - but might also consider the likes of Germany, France, Portugal), or
    - 2 European trophies (excl Super Cup), or
    - 1 World Cup, or
    - 1 European Championship

or a combination of the above.

That would probably give you 12 or 15 people who I'd regard as really world class who are still in the business.

Can anyone think of a world class manager who wouldnt fit that criteria?

    Brian Kerr or Curbishley

    Bookies slashing odds on both.

If there was 1 argument I could make for Kerr(obviously he is not worldclass) getting the job, it's that he is a defensive minded coach, and Sunderland haven't had a defense in quite a long time.

Managed an International team lost only 1 competitive game and one freindly, in 3 years sounds fairly world class to me added to the fact he won and finished runners up in under age, and won 2 leagues. Is he over qualififed?

Quinn dislikes him but his odds have been cut.

To be fair kdjac, the stats you mention are presented in a pro Kerr way. I could say he didn't beat an international team of significant worth in a competitive game in 3 years(he lost 2 competitive games by the way - Swiss and France)

It also doesn't take into account the countless draws we had in games we could and should of won.

Fact is we only needed one goal to get to World Cup, afaik Kerr isnt a striker :p

His record and stats prove he is the most succesful Irish Manager ever.

stats are useless to be honest and it's above example as to why.

Did he bring us to the knockout stages of the World Cup? No

    Mick and Jack Charlton(twice) did

I wouldn't say he's a defensive minded coach. I can't wait for Kerr to get a bloody job as I've little doubt he'd be a success.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,246 ✭✭✭sofireland

He does have some good qualities, the players have to take some of the blame in the games we dropped points in.

I'd like to see Kerr get a good job.
