I read this pile of sh1te in the Irish Independent today - its available on their site at http://www.unison.ie/irish_independent/stories.php3?ca=9&si=1674699&issue_id=14536 , but free registration is required.

CARS advertised for sale while parked at the roadside are simply a cover for 'boy racers' to contact other illegal racers.

That's the belief of a government TD, who is calling on gardai to target vehicles which permanently display 'For Sale' signs. Fianna Fail's Joe Callanan said he had information that, in many cases, such cars were not really for sale at all.

"It is an excuse to display a contact number so that racers can contact each other to arrange illegal races," he said.

"Illegal racing is the bane of many communities and we have noticed a marked increased in complaints from elderly people who are petrified to walk around their areas at night.

"While not all of those displaying 'For Sale' signs should be targeted, in many instances the people who seem to permanently have the car for sale are known to the gardai."

The East Galway TD also wants gardai to watch out for cars which are parked on the roadside with 'For Sale' signs and which are interfering with the visibility of other drivers.

"It is remarkable that certain parts of the road are almost a permanent outdoor car showroom."

Dear Joe Callanan, TD: You are a headline-grabbing bullsh1t artist.

I am no boy racer, don't drive a modified car and don't have any particular love for those that do, but the above article is so full of crap.

    1. Most car dealers won't take modded cars as trade ins, so these guys will have to sell privately. Putting a sign in your window is a hell of a lot cheaper than advertising in autotrader/cbg for months on end

    2. For sale signs in car windows are known to actually work quite well, as the potential buyer can see the car in the metal right away.

    3. Its not illegal to display a bloody phone number in your window. I take it drivers of commercial vans are into racing too then?

    4. Encouraging the Gardaí to "single out" drivers of cars with for sale signs smacks of profiling and discrimination.

    5. If they want to race each other all they have to do is pull up at the lights and do the usual shape throwing, engine revving sh1te.

    x 5000.

It will be a pair of Nike Air Max runners over the ariel next...

I'll have to tell the neighbour who has a FS sign on his Diahatsu Fourtrak...

My mate has a For Sale sign in his VW camper van. Despite being a steady type and an advanced driver, he's obviously a hooligan and needs to be neutralised.

Is anyone prepared to consider that there is an element of truth in what the TD is suggesting, but suggesting that Garda target cars which are for sale for a long time is a bit silly.

There is an election looming. All the politicians are trying to gain a bit of public profile so they can say how much they have done for us all.
    Ignore him!

Rumor has it around my neck of the woods is that it isn't the boyracer type cars that are for sale its that the owner of the car is selling some other stuff i.e. white stuff.;) :)

    Hardly with the exhausts....

I can see some credence in Junkyards suggestion though. Kinda thing I can see boy racer types being into.*

*Aware I am using a big brush and broad strokes.

Makes more sense than racing. If people want to race they will go to the well known local spots, even non boy racer types I'm sure know where these are in their areas.

I think this road side selling is being clamped down on anyway and its no harm either, I have to pay rates to the local town council to sell my cars at the side of the road and pay public liability insurance so why shouldn't everyone else? Not only that but I had to pay rent too to park my cars there. Its about time the councils and the Gardai called a halt to this road side selling. They're even selling cars on the roundabouts near me!

With all the cars for sale out there, perhaps there is a great opening for somebody to start organising 'Car Fairs'.

I went to one when I was in New Zealand in 2004 (they're very popular down there)

Basically you turn up (usually on a Saturday or Sunday) with your car, pay a small entry fee and park up your car for the day with a For Sale sign/Details on the windscreen.

A great way for sellers to appeal to lots of potential buyers, and a great way for buyers to see many cars in the one place!

Jasus. So how does this communication method work exactly? One car for yes, two cars for no? Or do they use the colours of the cars to convey more information?

And all this time I thought the boy racers were communicating through sonar, I feel so stupid...

I agree with that sentiment :)

Never heard about that muppet politician before. Anything to get your name published, eh? Shame on the indo to publish such rubbish :(

He's the local TD from my parents' constituency in Galway. And a muppet, clearly.

    Dear Deputy Callanan,

I have a for sale sign for my old car up in the window of my new car. Does this mean I can only engage in illegal street races in my old car?

I need confirmation on this Joe. I really wouldn't want to have bit of a street racing faux pas as I'll never be able to look Vin Diesel in the eye then.

    Yours etc,

I have it on good authority, from a serving member of the gardai, that advertising your car for sale like this in a public place is a breach of the casual trading act.
