Yeah - but think about it - the ds has expensive things like screens, and touch screen in it.

The wii, shouldn't cost a lot more than the GC to make, in many ways it is a bumped up GC. Same architecure as far as I can tell, just higher clock speeds, maybe bigger cache, more memory etc.

I just wish they'd release the ****ing thing already - i want it - i want it - i want it.

I would have thought that considering Nintendos return policy on dead pixels that the screens would have been a cheap component.

I can't imagine so, lcd screens AFAIK remain a relatively expenisve part of the machinery.

I would have thought their policy was more to do with keeping the customers happy and avoiding the hysteria surrounding the PSP and dead pixels.

Either way - nintendo makes profit on every ds sold - and they'll make profit on every Wii sold.

You could argue that the technology on the Wii is further behind the curve of modern development than the GC was when it was released. Which should make the components relatively cheaper.

The price has not been decided yet, but I expect it to be ... less than 250 euros
From Bernd Fakesch, head of German operations for Nintendo

I think €250 seems to be our price it's come up way too much now, all we need is a date

More rain...one of the stores in Limerick told me that they would be selling the Wii for between 300 and 330 but more likely closer to 330. I told them they were trying to take people for a ride.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

according to my friend in GAME they were looking to sell it for around 150 euros. He works for the GAME in henry street and thats what he was told by his co workers.

Now i dont know if they were pulling his leg, or he's pulling mine (he's normally very trustworthy) but thats what i heard last night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

I still think it'll be €200 ish. Anymore and it could be looked on as being too much, any less and It'll look like a toy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

I reackon it will be $250 even if the actual hardware is quite cheap to make the R&D would have been very expensive i think And they will have to recoup some of that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

    Possibly, but I recon it'll be €200 - €230.

Regardless of price I will be buying one anyway, but it will be interesting to see how the market goes thins Christmas given 3 quite different machines on the market, 4 if you count the PSP, divided not just by performance but by price, I have to wonder how parents are going to jump, although this Christmas will be early adopter season with most general, casual gamers only jumping on the next gen bandwagon Christmas '07.

I'll be gettin a Wii too for sure. :)

I dunno, I think that there'll be a lot of kids lookin forward to the PS3 that haven't heard how much its gonna cost that are gonna be disappointed come christmas. That plus the reported problems in manufacturing means theres not gonna be as many to go around as originally stated.
Given the Wii's innovation and low price point I think it'll sway a lot of parents buying, but only if they can see the bloody thing in action as opposed to just seeing posters for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,969 ✭✭✭christophicus

^^^ in all fairness parents buying consoles for their kids normally go for something they have heard of before e.g PS3. The vast majority of them will not have heard of the Wii at all adn will think of the PS3 as the safe bet because they have heard of the PS2.

Regarding parents, while generally they are a bunch of mindless sheep, don;t underestimate dads who want to use their sons/daughters new console to play Fifa/GTA, given that both of these franchises are coming to the 360 first.
Sonys own soccer games have always sold poorly and the brand Fifa Soccer is at least as powerful as Playstation is, that is just speculation on my part, in the real world you are going to have the 360 and PS3, two machines not poles apart in terms of power but certainly poles apart in terms of price points.
I fully expect MS to make some serious inroads this Christmas with a lower price point and a killer 3rd wave of releases while Sony push out the PS3 with a very high price and the usual drivel as launch titles.
All console dominance is eventually lost, Nintendo, Sega, Atari, it always ends and ends due to the lack of attention to the target audience, the production of products that simply "don't cut the mustard", pehaps the PS3 is Sonys three legged donkey in this horse race.

Well I'm gonna go ahead and underestimate it, While I agree fifa/pro evo on 360 only this xmas will deffo push xbox sales, kids will want ps3. It's so simple sony have almost total control of the gaming market in Ireland, stop one hundred 15 year old punks on the street, If 80 have consoles, you can gaurentee 70 of them are ps2's  if not more.

November afaik, round the same time as ps3.

I believe that with such a low PS3 production run that there will be a lot of very disappointed kids this christmas. I'd say a load of 360's and Wii's will be sold due to parents being put off by the high price and as 'consolation' presents.

Are there not any concerns of shortages of wii's this christmas? It seems that just about everyone is planning on getting a wii, me included.

They've been manufacturing them for ages now... i can't see there being a terrible shortage.

Regarding the dominance of PlayStation as a videogaming brand, yeah sure no one is denying that but Snes and Genesis were both the systems kids wanted until there next gen machines, the Saturn and N64 simply failed to light a fire beneath consumers, as a result it put Sega out of the hardware business within 6 years and Nintendo on the back foot until the DS came out, and their home consoles still haven't broken any popularity records, despite some genuinely great software.
PS3 will probably sell great to grownups, to those folk with the plasma/lcd HD set up with the dolby digital/THX setup, folk who already spend quite a few bob on consumer electronics but to kids this Christmas, don't think so, I have a feeling sony have completely misjudged the market, a market far bigger than games enthusiasts, if all it took were gamers to make a system a success then the DC and GC would be doing great numbers, but its not, casual gamers, non gamers, these are the people looking for a way into next gen, and an admission price like €500/€600 is simply too high.
Nintendo on the other hand have taken the model and turned it on its head, producing a modestly powered console, easy to develop for, with a control method that should remove the need to learn a controllers config off by heart before playing, producing titles to appeal to both gamers, Metroid Prime 3 and Zelda, and games to appeal to non gamers, Wii Sports, Mario Galaxy.
And to top ot all off they are to sell it at a very competitive price, a price lower than the public have ever had to pay for entrance to a new way to play.
    Should be an interesting winter...

    I have an Xbox a PS2 and a high spec PC. There's just no attraction in getting a 360 or a PS3.

    Bring on the Wii!!!!!

Xbox LIVE! is a great attraction imo.

Also, the games starting to come out are immense.

will kids even know about ps3 on release? i havent seen ne adverts for 360... or kids crying for one

The publicity machine will be ramped up in the next month, the usual regurgitated press releases splashed across a page or two of the tabloids, crappy games magazines devoting pages of coverage to great, must have games, that no one has actually played yet, on both PS3 and Wii.
As soon as Sony and Nintendo start releasing concrete info they'll know.
Its their reaction to each one that interests me.
Does KillZone or Motorstorm have enough pulling power? Or Metroid and Zelda for that matter, or will Fifa win the day for MS this Christmas?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,807 ✭✭✭chump

ohh the kids will want the ps3, ahead of any other console. They are sheep. Most of them have only ever known the playstation, and anything less will be disappointment.
You could write out the arguments for/against the console for them, and it wouldn't make a damned bit of difference, all they know is they want one.

My girlfriend was in Smyth’s in Dublin – the one near UGC cinema – on Saturday, and she asked the assistant did she have a release date for the Wii. She said 3rd of November, at a price of 250Euro. She was taking deposits. I’m starting to get excited now!

Didn't get any info on bundles/offers etc though.

@ chump - tell your kids you'll go halfers on any console they want and see their interest spike in the Wii. ;)

@ CiDeRmAn - Metroid and Zelda have huge pull - especially Zelda.

I dont believe this for a second. Dont underestimate kids. They are well informed in these internet days and know exactly what they want. Maybe advertising can control them but that also works on adults , even more than kids actually.
The fact that so many gamers wont fork out 700+ for a console with one game means parents definitely will not.

I hope nintendo can pull off a good advertising campaign to ensure the wii kicks off and will have good support well into the future.

I was originally thinking of getting a ps3 and a HD tv. I am now going to get a wii a few games a nice flatscreen and still have nice bit of change.

73% of japanese say they want wii."]

I actually hope you're right. I'm just saying what I see/hear, and the Wii might excite the real yung uns, and the more refined elder gamer, but the teens will want the ps3! :D
Ya hear them spout off stats and figures, that they nothing about, and things like blu-ray and its advantages etc etc... They'll want the very cutting edge, the very coolist.

    I want a Wii

    Just to stir/moan...
    http://www.nintendowiifanboy.com/2006/08/08/more-release-date-and-price-speculation/

If that 'merkin release price of $229 is right, that works out at €180 (add 50% for that Irish Price). The release dates are all converging on early-mid November.

Rumours of 5 million unit to be sold before christmas? I wonder just how many will make it over here.

    ooo! The excitement!
This will be my first ever console. :o I'm 29.:o My GF said she'd get me one for christmas.:D
