Is 10% loading fairly standard when a main contractor gives you
an allowance (PC sum) for something different within the original
    construction quote ?

For example - He quoted inclusive of Tegral manmade slate and
labour. We've investigated Spanish natural slates (Cupa) and the
additional cost is fairly significant. If we took that option he would
charge 10% of the difference between the manmade slate (which
was part of the original quote) and the cost of materials & labour
    for the natural slate.

I think the 10% attendance cost is fairly standard - I just wanted
to see how other self builders (non direct labour) fared out with
their main contractor when they were given an allowance for
    alternative material/labour on some jobs.

10% sounds okay. I don't think you will get it any lower.
