So I've signed up for a couple of pilates sessions/classes/im not sure what they are called, and I know freakishly little about it. so naturally enough i googled it, only to find pictures of old men with their legs behind their ears and people contorted into strange positions. do u have to be very fit to start with for this kind of exercise? does anyone have any tips for not pulling every muscle i possess? its probably quite obvious im not a gym bunny! :p

One of my trainers is a pilates instructor. Although I don't do it myself I am keenly aware of the benefits and I think you've made an excellent choice. One of the great things about Pilates is that it can easily accomodate the beginner and advanced alike. There are very easy gentle progressions taking you from the flexability of a wooden plank to those wonderful contrtions you mentioned.

In fact, I was going through some techniques the other day, (my friends is doing a DVD), and although I am in good shape it was a really invigorating experience, working a variety of muscles I had neglected and working out some kinks from over training.

    Can't recommend it highly enough!

Started pilates in Sydney about 9 months ago while living there. Couldnt believe how good a workout it was! As Boru said in last post it doesnt matter how fit or flexible you are, you will be able to do it at your own level. Its the only workout that I find getting harder the more I do it as your control and flexibility improves. Amazing in OZ how many guys and rugby teams etc do pilates on a regular basis, think its only a matter of time before people here start to see the benefits of core training. So convinced by its strengths and benefits that I am now training to be an instructor here!
