Keyboard not being recognized on start up.

Bought a new Dell recently and nearly from the start there was a problem with the keyboard not being recognized when I start it up.

    I get the error message....
    Keyboard Failure
Drive 5 not found: Parrallel ATA, PATA-1 (PRI IDE Slave)
Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility
It's not really a problem in itself to press the F1 key as the computer then starts up fine, but in the last week I've been using a wireless keyboard and if I press the F1 button during the error message nothing happens. I have to plug the old keyboard in and then press F1 for the computer to start and then i can use the wireless keyboard fine which is a bit of a pain.

    Any suggestions?

It might be a motherboard issue, something you can't do a whole lot about. I would also send it back.

Sounds like you have a drive set to 'on' in the BIOS but it's not installed. Switch it to 'off' and it should be ok.

Can't remember exactly where it lists the drives in BIOS, but I'll look tonight on "The Beast" when I get home.

Do you not think that's a bit of an over reaction so early? I'd rather do a quick troubleshoot before going to the extreme lengths of returning it.

I think I might know what's wrong, gonna check it out tonight and see if I can sort it.

I was talking to a friend and he reckons I might not have installed a driver for the wireless Keyboard or it wasn't done properly. He may be right, I'll now later I suppose.

OK, try to fix it by all means but you'll find its Dells job to get it right in the first place and don't forget to ring them up and complain (should be able to get a freebie) as this is an unacceptable situation to leave a customer in. Good Luck, its a Dell you'll need it!
