    OK, i'll be the first to answer my own question!

    I use blogger but what I do is...
    I post on my blogspot dashboard and then use the RSS feed for own site and embed the .xml file in the HTML!

    I hand code my blog in xhtml with css. I will code any features I might need in php when I get around to it. It's very minimalistic but I like the control I have over the appearance.
