Doing squats with a bath robe belt- any other DIY weight ideas?

I was thinking of getting resistance straps then heard of people using bicycle inner tubes. I got an old tube and figured out the resistance. I looped it around a barbell with lots of weight then looped it over a scales, I lifted it up and at shoulder height it was 40kg on the scales. So I reckon 2 of these looped over a 120kg barbell will be 80kg if I was to do squats with them over my shoulder. But the resistance is only in effect at the top, but I could use a lighter bar on my shoulders in addition.

I then looped the tube through the middle of a weight and hung it over my shoulder, I held it up with my hand so the weight was about 1/2 supported by my shoulder and 1/2 on my arm, this worked OK but was a bit "bouncy" when squatting and it moved too much. I like the fact I would be able to handle huge weight as it was split between arm and shoulder.

Then I got a thick belt from a bathrobe, this worked very well, I knotted the end to make a big loop. I passed one end through 40kg of weights, I then took the the loops and put them over my wrist so it I put my arm out straight, palm down, the weight would dangle below. Then I put my arm by my side and grasp the belt. This is like a wrist strap, yet it "finds itself" perfectly since the "bar" you are holding is the actual "wrist strap". I have a wrist strap and this is far better IMO, it is easier to get a more even force on the hand and wrist.

I have not done squats yet since it was my day off, I think it would be good for trap work too. Of course be careful that the belt is strong enough. This should allow me to do squats without a rack. I tried bumbell squats but the plates are too big and crash against my knees, meaning I have to do awkward movements while going up & down which cannot be good. Should be good for trap shrugs too, and there is no issue with balancing bars either.

Has anybody else got ideas for training with common/cheap objects?

I can think of some stuff you could do with Paris Hilton.
