ok so i'm your fairly typical south dublin 20 something fellow who's looking to get more active in his spare time (any time after 6.30 in the evening mon-fri and anytime on weekends).

looking to get actively involved in a new sport/hobby that ideally meets all of the below criteria:

    - can be undertaken all year round
    - team participation
    - cheap
    - keeps you fit

also, can't be footy - the auld knees can't take it anymore

    any recommendations?

    Perhaps golf. :)

Golf would be harder to play past 630 in the winter, no light. Maybe an indoor sport, like badminton.

Thats when you go play indoor minigolf, problem solved. :p

Have been thinking the same way as the OP in regards starting something new.

My suggestion is hillwalking/climbing (not really a team sport unless you count a rockclimbing dyad/triad as a team). However, best of all, you don't ned to be super fit to take it up.

Wicklow isn't too far away from you and it's supposed to be really beautiful down that way.

    Cricket.... think about it...

It's not that cheap to start out with but in the long term, yeah it's a pretty cheap sport. Great socialising, great team play and absolutely great sport.

It's also a pretty interesting sport and people tend to get hooked on it, so if like me, your personality is pretty boring in every other way, well, there's always cricket!Sad or what:o

Is that the condition of a fairly typical 20 something fellow? I must be a miracle of medical science in that case

You should take up dogwalking. The dog is your team-mate. Walking keeps you fit, you can do it all round and it's cheap (unless you get one of those poncy poodles, stucks up bastards always wanting the best!). *shakes fist*

Juggling: can be done all year round, you get to make jokes about playing with your balls, can be a partner sport and there's a fairly active convention scene

Was going to Say the same thing but wouldnt go so far as to say No Impact on the Knees In rowing the main muscle you use is Your legs... But its a great sport and its very easy to catch the Rowing Bug....Neptune/Commerical Rowing club would have good Novice rowers...

No seriously why not give rowing a go, plenty of clubs down by the liffey.
Savage for fitness, great team work, cheap - free use of gyms. No impact so the knees will survive

    Photography?

Buy a film slr kit with standard lens for 120 quid and off you go. If you like it, you'll spend more money, and might even make some back! You can join camera clubs for free, learn how to develop your own film etc.

Hikes about the town, mountains etc etc will keep you fit!

    Take up a drug addiction.
I personally reccommend heroin. It will keep you meek enough not to realise what is going on, whilst at the same time draining all your money. This will lead to you eating less food, and as such you will be fitter.

Its also a great way to meet loads of fellow minded individuals, all over Dublin city. Life long friendships are there to be forged, my friend.

Do not confuse weight loss with fitness

    FROLF FTW

Seriously I don't know why more people aren't getting into this sport, its HUGE in the states. You can pretty much set up a course anywhere that theres..eh.. air to throw a frisbee! The discs they use for FROLF aren't your run of the mill frisbees, as they are designed for not being caught (my friend nearly lost his fingers trying it) so are more aerodynamic/heavy and can travel greater distances.

    Watch me

    sounds a bit dangerous.

    sounds a bit dangerous.

"nearly" meaning he jumped around in circles for about 10 minutes and his hand swelled up like a balloon. These disks can reach speeds of +150km/h and weigh up to 200g's, they also have pointed edges for aerodynamics. Its like trying to catch your dinner plate travelling at 100km/h with the edges sharpened... not advisable, my friend just couldn't cope with the concept of not catching a frisbee.

If you're knees are up to running then perhaps think about joining a triathlon club. You can pick from various distances...and just keep putting in effort to better your previous times in each distance. I started back in April/May this year. The variety keeps monotony at bay, plus you'll get pretty fit doing all three sports per week.

Or if your knees aren’t up to much, try swimming. No pressure on your joints and very fitness orientated. Recommend a masters club, good craic, you don’t have to be brill and a lot of it is bout trips and fun rather than swimming.

Not for everyone but life for some.
