You should go for a +- dvd/rw. so you can copy to both media formats. You should also look out for one which is dl ( dual layer ) which means copying twich as much onto dl disc's ( is that the correct spelling ?? ) Stay away from lite-on and emerax ( i think their called ) basicially any make you have never heard of before. Plextor would be considered the best of the best when it comes to dvd burners, sony, phillips and the likes are also very good.

    hope this helps you :D

Other companies rebrand their stuff - it can be difficult (Sony for one).
    <3 LG.

OP: Are you comfortable with opening your computer? An internal drive is considerably cheaper than an external.

Go for an internal one so, they are not hard to get and are cheap enough. Saves the extra cluttery and external power supply you would have if you went for an external writer.

I recently bought an NEC from Komplett, 37 yoyos plus P+P, does everything except RAM. An easy to install internal that windows recognised straight away, no messing around with settings or bios etc.

I bought an LG external drive at Christmas, and had nothing but problems with it. I replaced it with the same model, only for the problems to repeat again. I finally replaced with a Phillips, which is excellent.

I'd go with Philips/BenQ as well (BenQ use Philips chipsets) get a BenQ 1650 on Komplett.

The ODD (optical disk drive) industry is consolidating with not many players left.

Lite-On now owns BenQ's ODD division which was previously a joint venture between BenQ & Philips so future Philips chipset powered drives from them are in doubt.
