Does anyone know how to tell which type of media your DVD burner is capable of using?

I have searched in vain to get an answer to this question.

For example, lets say you bought a secondhand no-name machine & had no documentation for it? you know it has a DVD burner, so what type of blank discs should you buy? (+Plus) (-Minus) How do you know?

Is there anyway of finding out through Windows or any software package that can identify the media type for you?

DVD Info Pro. 15 day trial but you only need to run it once tbh.
