Can anybody tell me does leaving your laptop on charge a lot of the time make the battery weaker?

Its difficult to say but in the long run it degrades the battery, yesh.

"Weaker"-not quite...It may reduce the lifetime of the battery, however.
There's a finite number of charge cycles.
If you're going to be using the laptop for a long time plugged in-you may want to take the battery out first. However, I quite like the battery being as it acts as a UPS.

Anyway, prolonging your lithium-ion battery's life is a losing battle TBH.
Some guidelines, and possibly more information than you want to ever know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li-ion#Guidelines_for_prolonging_Li-ion_battery_life
