Apple Powerbook G4

    Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my apple powerbook G4. For no reason at all it just stopped working. What could be the list of possibilities that could have happened for it to break down like that. I have tried taking out the ram one by one and pressing the power button to see if it turns on...but to no avail. Every time I press the power button the caps lock button can light up but nothing else. The screen does not come on and the hard drive does not turn on.

    Help please??

I have been told it will cost 400 to repair and I cant afford that so anything you can suggest will be definately good for me.

Sounds like a bigger problem than the ram it would appear....could be the logic board (what ever that is?I'm assuming motherboard as I'm used to PC's/laptops not the mac variety)Might not be much that can be done.....

I've some experience with Macs and it sounds to me as if there's a problem with the motherboard. Specifically, it sounds as if a capacitor has blown- you mention that its lights are coming on but its not booting. If its a G4 would it still be under warranty?

Its definately not under warrenty any more. could the problem also be a wasted screen? Does the screen control whether the computer is turned on or not. I got a woman in my village to look at it and she said it was the screen that was gone but I tried using a desktop screen to see if it would swich on but it didn't.

    Thanks.

Nah, definitely not the screen. If that were the case you'd still hear it going through the motions of booting up, hard disk working etc. Also, if you tried it with an external monitor and nothing appeared on screen, you know thats that. I'm sorry to say that it really does sound like the motherboard. If its a blown capacitor, it'll be obvious once it'd out of the machine. Anyone halfway decent with electronics and a soldering iron could sort it for you. If it more than that, you're looking at a serious repair job or a replacement board. Try Mactivate in Dublin- they can assess it and quote you for a repair but I warn you now, board repairs aren't cheap and a new board isn't much better. Hope you can get it sorted- its always sad to say goodbye to a Mac!

Ah great, thanks a million for that company name...only 5 minutes from home!!! I'll definately hand it into them to have a look. I just hope to god it isn't as serious that will get me to buy a new motherboard....I think if that is the case a new computer would be better.

Anyways, thanks a million for that!
